Check engine light

Check engine light

On a 1998 U270 8.3 mechanical engine does the check engine light always stay on? The reason I ask is that I have never noticed it until I was leaning forward to check out something and noticed it.
Probably a stupid question, but I will expose myself to ridicule to learn the answer. Do not flame me too hard.
And what are your recommendations? Thanks John

I've got the same coach as yours and mine does not stay on.
