Good Price for Fuel Shutoff Solenoid?

This will only be of interest to those with the mechanical C8.3 Cummins.

I've been wanting to replace my original OEM fuel shutoff solenoid - preventative maintenance, you know.  I have read the excellent description of procedure at Beamalarm.com:

Fuel Shut Off Solenoid Replacement

Happened to be surfing eBay this evening and came across this offering for the same Cummins solenoid kit described in link above.  If you've shopped this item lately you'll realize that this is a GOOD price for the kit.  Almost too good to be true...  Well, being a trusting soul (also referred to as a sucker), I decided to take a chance and order one.  Supposed to be covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee in case it is a rip-off.  We'll see what happens. Here's the link:

$70 vs $300 is indeed a great price. Good luck. It has all the parts we got with our Cummins purchase. Should have no problem installing , just follow adjustment to be sure it opens all the way.

That is a super price. I had purchased one several weeks ago and paid $412. The part numbers are the same. >:D

All 6 are now sold - you snooze, you lose.  I got my shipping notification today.  I will make a final post to close this thread when my package arrives.  If it is all as advertised and looks legit, then I will be a happy camper.  If not.......I'll chalk it up to a "Learning Experience" (one of many).

Good luck to all of us!

As promised, here is my report on my eBay purchase.  The seller did not waste much time or effort on shipping preparation - merely scribbled my name and address on the box and sent it off.  Arrived here a little beat up, but still intact.  The box had obviously been opened (multiple times?) and resealed.  The contents were exactly as described in the eBay ad, and appear to be in perfect condition.  Of course, The final test will be when I bolt the solenoid on the engine and see if it works, but so far I feel like I probably got a pretty good deal for the price ($87.45 including shipping).  Photos below.

One thing I should mention about the solenoid...it is stamped "Made in China".  I was prepared for this, because I have read that many of the "genuine factory service parts" being sold for Cummins engines are made overseas.  For instance, ALL the replacement Cummins mechanical lift pumps (transfer pumps) now being sold are made in China.  I don't want to get into the old "Everything made in China is Junk" debate, because I don't believe that statement is true.  I think Cummins, like all global companies, will source their parts from wherever in the world they can buy (or produce) them for the best price.  I'm just sorry that is not the USA.

Note to Moderators:  If I got too "political" with that last comment, feel free to redact it.

On my engine, original pump part number (from Cummins Quickserve Online) is 3932225.  This part # is obsolete.  More current numbers are 3936316 or 3936317.

I just bought a (stock-type) pump.  This is the best price I could find: $84.16 with free shipping + if it's your first order they give you additional $10 off = $74.16.  Seller shipped fast, and it arrived in perfect condition.  Haven't installed it yet, but appears to be the correct replacement (knock on wood).  In my research shopping for fuel system items, I have discovered that the 1994-1998 Cummins 5.9L and 8.3L 12-valve engines have a lot of common parts.  Makes it easier to find stuff, because the 5.9L was used in Dodge pickup trucks, and that is a BIG market (especially in West Texas)!

cajk, thanks for the link. I'm going to order one to throw on the rig.

My engine is a 1997, so I may be lucky with the fuel shutoff being a different design. I don't have any starting or power problems and I always have zip ties or wire or string or etc etc to keep me going down the road.

Noticed some weeping and general nastiness around the pump on mine so went ahead and replaced it with one ordered from Cummins.  $90.00 or so, hecho en China.  No great fun standing on my head to replace it but found that now a few strokes of the prime button actually purges the air after a filter change. Worth it just for that.

Agreed on the good price from Cummins which is where I eventually bought it.

I first bought one off of Ebay which cross referenced the newest Cummins pump revision but when I got it it was not correct.  The correct factory unit has a 1/2" input and a 1/4" output but the one I was sent had 1/4" input and output.  Seller refunded my money.

I got the final solenoid off of Ebay, almost waited too long.  Thanks, cajk.

Robert,

Thanks for that info on the lift pump (inlet and outlet fitting size).  Since I have not yet removed my original pump, I did not know about the difference in size.  Soon as I read your post, I ran out to the shop and checked my replacement pump (the one I referenced above), and it does have the correct size fittings.  ^.^d

I had my lift pump strand me on the highway south of Jacksonville,Il. without warning. It was just like one turned the key off. Was towed into Int'l truck service center that replaced it. Very knowledgeable. The company has a tech for cummins, cat, and int'l. They worked me right in and was on my way by noon. I would definitely go back to then again.
If the mentioned lift pump is the correct one, I would buy on for a spare even though mine was just replaced. If anyone is interested in the name and phone PM me.
