Simplehuman Soap Dispenser

This was a fun little project... though it could have been much simpler just mounted on the wall. I wanted to preserve the space inside the shower as much as I could, so I mounted on a 16 gage brass plate which I found in the scrap pile at IMS (Industrial Metal Supply) here in San Diego. It wasn't long enough to span the distance between the shower frame members, so I found another small piece at a local True Value. The small piece is .032" and so wasn't too hard to bend. I cut it in half and then cut down the width of the 16G piece to match. The two angle pieces are pop riveted to the larger piece. The soap pump baseplate has 4 or 5 strips of 3M VHB double stick tape on the back. Not being the trusting sort, I drilled and taped holes for two ⅜" 8-32 stainless steel machine screws at each end of the plastic plate. Since the 3m tape actually holds the base plate up off the surface of the brass mounting plate, I used a couple of stainless steel washers between the plastic soap base plate and the brass plate so that the screws could be tightened without distorting the plastic. TMI? Always a possibility... Oh well, hope you enjoy the pictures anyway ;D

I used the Simplehuman Stainless single as a replacement in the Utilties Bay. I like the pull type dispense method. And it looks nice as a replacement.

We bought a dispenser at Camping World and I stuck it to the shower wall. It fell down a couple times and since she was SURE that was where she wanted it I used Gorilla Glue and that was that! ^.^d A week later she said she didn't want it :'( and that I should take it down. Probably be easier to buy another Foretravel than get that thing off the wall! ;D

After having this one my my previous MH,
Amazon.com - Better Living The Dispenser Classic 4 Chamber - Shower Dispensers
I vowed never again.  That thing was okay at first, but if you didn't use a particular item quickly enough, it gummed up and wouldn't dispense easily.  The buttons seemed to weaken over time, so it was very hard to dispense and you would have to pump while blocking the outlet--prime it to get it to pump again.

That Simplehuman one looks much better in the button design, looks like you pull instead.  And nice fabrication on the bracket!  I cringed when you mentioned buying a second piece of brass in order to lengthen it, but it looks great.  Always a pleasure reading your reports!

It is a pull-to-pump and has a smooth die-cast T-bar pump handle which feels comfortable to the hand. I don't have a way to do precise bends on thicker material, so the three piece design worked out well with the thinner side pieces. I would rather have cut the 16 gage piece down to span the whole distance rather than have to lengthen it, but I would still probably have used the three piece design anyway. Oh well, it is just a soap dispenser... I am happy with how it turned out. I haven't used it yet, but I will post about how well the pumps work when I get a chance to try it. I think I am almost due for my monthly shower... :o

Says the man with the insane decoupage paper bag floor! ;D
Update... I finally got around to taking my monthly shower and can report that these pumps are awesome! Two pumps sufficed to prime even the conditioner pump! The last one I had at the S&B took so many strokes to get it started after refill that I had to switch hands to keep the muscularity in balance....
Love it!

Don,
As with all your projects it really looks nice.  Where can you find the dispenser and how did did you mount it in the shower?  Oh, and much do you charge for the mounting brackets? LOL

Jerry,
Thanks.. Tys found the triple soap dispenser at Bed, Bath, & Beyond... Being the bargain huntress she is, she had a 20% off coupon and a store credit. The bracket is a on off, but a brass finish aluminum kick plate might be modified to do the job... I used to see them made out of real brass, but apparently that is a thing of the past....

Don,
The kick plate is an excellent idea.  Did you have to drill a couple of holes for mounting?
Thanks
