Trying to find coolants that are identical to Texaco 7998

From this information I gather that I may use Detroit Power Cool Plus with the Texaco extended life 7978 to top up the cooling system in the M11 cummins and also to top up the aqua hot and generator which all have Texaco extended life stickers at or near the fill areas.

I noticed reading Barry Beam's notes on cooling that he could not include Detroit Power Cool Plus as there was no definitive information linking the two as identical.

This brings me to the words used, identical and compatible. The instructions read to add or top off with identical products. The list above shows compatible coolants.

Is this semantics or asking for pitted cylinder liners? (topping off with power cool plus in a system using Texaco brand)

Suspect that only a call to a Texaco chemist could answer the question-- and it is an excellent one.

Yes, Texaco could make all of them.

Yes, they could be identical.

OR, as the verbiage suggests, the may only be "compatible" which is way down the scale from identical.

My suggestion is to not take a chance until this has been confirmed.  Would rather see one top off (we are talking ounces or at most a quart or two here in an 18+ gallon system) with distilled water than to chance mixing coolants.

And remember, with any of these new generation OAT-based coolants (aka ELC coolants), the coolant filter HAS TO BE A BLANK-- i.e. zero units SCA.

It is nearing time to replace the coolant and filters in our 1995 U320 with Cummins M11 400 Hp engine. I've read so much information about this subject that I'm rather confused, and would appreciate some straight-talk recommendations on the best replacements as well as the best source of authoritative information. Thanks!

 There is a good read on "RV Cruzer.com coolants for HD engines in RV's." The article explains how piston liners become pitted if the proper coolant is not used. I also found that Cummins put out a bulletin in 2013 explaining Cummins engineering standard 14603  to better coat the liners for the pitting problem? What becomes difficult is trying to find a standard to compare different brands as to chemistry as Brett Wolf has pointed out.

When I purchased our coach a couple of years ago I did a lot of research on this issue, because cross contamination can be a major problem, and I didn't want to deal with that.  I spoke to Shell who told me they had bought Texaco, and while he stopped short of saying it was the same product, which I don't think he could.  He did tell me that using the Rotella would definitely not be a problem.
I have used the Rotella for 2 years with no issues.

What coolant is the easiest to find to purchase? (Like in a bind, can find it at a truckstop, etc)

It seems Cummins/Cat/Detroit coolant would only be available from dealers at their lovely prices.

Counterpoint:  I would choose a brand that your engine manufacturer's dealers would have in stock.  That way, if you are ever in for service, you would not contaminate the system by their adding a non-compatible coolant.

I have seen Rotella ELC at Flying J etc. I have a Gallon in storage bay in case of need. When I had it serviced at Colon Truck Terminal before our trip to Meccadoches in October last year, they put in CAT ELC (I wanted the Rotella ELC, but they didn't have it). At the time, I bought an extra gallon of the CAT ELC, and had to use that on our trip to Texas after the radiator started seeping at the seem. I tightened up the bolts (all that I could get a wrench on) and added Bars Leak. No issues since... I picked up the gallon of Rotella ELC at a Flying J after that, because I believe that it is compatible based on some reading I did at the time. I may just buy more Rotella ELC and change it out to that, but I think it will have to wait a few months until we get back from our Canadian/Pacific Northwest trip.

I understand your point, and it is valid for most people. However, I do all the work on everything I own (coach, cars, house, etc), even if that includes rebuilding engines. Only a few things will I have others do that are very specialized and I don't have the equipment--and then it will be highly regarded people--such as the alignment I just had done by Josam in Orlando.

So, in my case...I want to use the coolant that is most accessible to me. Too bad walmart doesn't carry it!

What area are you located in?  Maybe someone can suggest a local source with a good price.  In central Texas we found the best price for Rotella ELC at Kino Oil.

Home base is in VA. I'm not doing a coolant change for a bit. I need to procure all new hoses first.
