I get the feeling that we all have different setups.  My fill plug is on the front, takes a 1/2" drive ratchet to remove.  It took 1 quart to top it off.  I don't have any leaks so have no reason to think it's been low.

Well, the front is the back, in this case. The engine is in the rear!

As for the vent.. make sure it's open.  I threaded a nipple into mine and added a length of fuel line with a small (fuel filter) tied above the frame.

Not knowing your setup, I check with Meritor(?) for the fill level.  As big as the diff is, running it a little low won't be an issue.    pc

Thanks Krusch, I had the feeling I wasn't thinking things through completely ;D

In the olden days hauling gravel, if we could reach in the fill hole and feel oil that was considered good enough, probably not something I would subscribe to today.
