Screen Door Snuggerupper

My entry door has/had a black plastic piece held in place by three screws. It's purpose was to keep the screen door "attached" so they opened and closed as one unit.

Those screws appear to be "stripped" and no longer hold the black holder in place. I have already grown tired of maneuvering them as two separate entities. Does anyone know what the screws screwed into? Was it metal, so I can just use a larger gauge screw? was it fiberglass or some thinner material which needs something more substantial to 'get a grip'? If so, would a plastic wall anchor solve the problem, or do I want to enlarge the hole and glue in a dowel for a new mounting surface. Or should I just glue some toothpicks into the existing hole and use the same screws?

The surface under the black plastic is padded fabric/leatherette stuff, so I cannot see behind it.

Anyone been there and done that?

Thanks,
