Replacing headlight switch

The rheostat in my headlight switch doesn't work very well.
I often have to fiddle with it to turn the dash lights on. (In '96 they used mini-blubs, not the electroluminescent dash)

In searching for a part number on the forum I ran across a reference to a
'AC Delco Headlight Switch - #D1506A'
Amazon.com: ACDelco D1506A Headlight Switch: Automotive

The post referenced a '93 so I don't know if the same part was used in '96.

Questions
Is the AC Delco Headlight Switch - #D1506A the correct part?
To replace the switch do you just unplug from the existing socket(s) and replug into the new switch or is there some circuit tracing required?
Thanks

8 years ago we replace our light switch because the rheostat did not work. We purchased it from Foretravel, FT #7109202 $34.63. Just unplug and replug connector. Front knob has to be released to slip out and re-used.

Rheostat now needs a bit of giggling, Using contact cleaner and rotating the knob may clean it up and make it work again.

This stuff will fix it, not cheap but works on electrical issues. You can google to purchase.

Can't answer the question about the part number, but you have to push a little button on the sw. unit and pull the knob. With a little wiggling the knob and shaft will come out. You then unplug the harness and remove the sw. I went to carquest and matched my sw to one in their catalog. It is a gm part number and make sure you get a match on the harness connection. Putting the new switch just do everything in reverse. Its not hard.

I just replaced my 1992 U225 headlight switch yesterday, the dash light dimmer did not work anymore, it was an 8 spade(connector) headlight switch from a 1973  chevy Camaro at autozone; $11.95.
Now I have dash lights that are bright and dimmable.

FWIW,
I got my headlight switch (replacement) about a year ago. It is the same as a GM van headlight switch and it is very easy to change out.  I got mine at autozone and I believe it was less than $20.  I was having some issues with loss of contact (and loss of headlights, OUCH!).  Easy and cheap fix.

I'll replace it when we get back in two weeks (maybe sooner but I don't want to create a problem too soon :)) )

thanks to all
