overheating (not)

While thinking about radiator overheating for another post on this forum I remembered that I've been intending to tell folks about something that kinda freaked me out until I fixed it. On several occasions while driving in blindingly violent rainstorms I noticed my transmission and radiator temperature gauges going nuts. The transmission temperature would sometimes go down to zero and stay there, sometimes for a long time. The radiator temperature would sometimes go all the way to the top of the scale and stay there a short time, causing me to immediately pull over and shut down the engine. The apparent cure for both of these was the same, to clean the terminal and wire connector on the sensor, tighten the connector by squeezing it carefully with pliers, reconnecting it, then coat the whole thing with some "Liquid Tape" rubbery insulating coating. I let it dry a day and then coated it again. It appears to be fixed now. No water can get into the connection... Hope this helps someone who is freaking out thinking they burned up their engine in a rainstorm. :)

I find it very useful to carry a can of electronic component cleaner for just this kind of thing.  Spray it on the contacts to flush out any moisture and to clean them .  Other tightening and adjustments may also be needed.  I used it recently to clean out the shore power connection after a rainstorm. It was tripping a GFI that my grandson had me tied into for minimum overnight battery charge.  Have a great day  ----  Fritz
