Dash instrument lights problem 99 U320

We hardly ever travel at night... but about a week ago we came home from the FMCA rally in Redmond Oregon late in the evening... and the instrument lights would come on for two seconds and then go off for 20 seconds... all but the speedometer and the tachometer... Fortunately we only had about 20 miles to go....  Very strange indeed... any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

Have experienced same, Light switch has reostat for brightness,
needs sprayed with electrical cleaner. Spray and turn switch back
forth a few times and this should take care of it.

I would think that the rheostat would affect all lights as they have a common ground with others.
Strange one but yes try the grounding first.

My dash lights on my 95 became dim so I replaced it very simple. I took the one I removed and matched it at the auto parts store. They look alike but you have to match harness connection. About $25 bucks

97's have electroluminescent javalena panels.  Transformer powered to my knowledge.

Lots of my ground and other dash wires loosened up over 17 years.

Boy I sure didn't explain myself very well what I meant to say was I replaced the light switch not the dash lights. The switch was made by GM and over time dimer on it gets old and corroded. Once replaced all dash light became nice and bright and dimming was smooth.

Do you have the number for the gm switch?

There was no number on the switch. I know it was gm because I retired from the truck group and the knob was gm. When I went to carquest auto parts we looked at the blade connections for the harness and matched them to one in his part switch catalog. It was a gm but I can't remember year and model. Its important to get the blade connection right that way the harness will plug right in.
