Search for LED lights.  Lots of ideas out there.

I have replaced my flourecents with LED strip lights.  Take out the guts of the flourescents and put in as many inches of the strips as is needed for the kev l of light you want.  Strips come in 5 meter spools, warm or cool white (most people like warm), they have self stick tape on the back and can be cut and spliced at any length.  Some strips are waterproof.  Some have LED chips closer together.  Prices range from $1/ft to almost $10.  Splices and connectors are easy to find and cheap.

I have also put in a lot of 3" glass LED ceiling lights.  They also make them in much higher lumen level in a 4.5" lamp.  Two 4.5" lamps replaced the LED strip replacement for the flourescent over the sink. Much better light, less wattage, cooler.  Most LEDs are dimmable.  My preference is more light is better, dim as needed.

I too replaced the fl' fixtures with cut lengths of led's and the halogens with replacement led units in old fixtures. Way way better and all undercabinet ones are on dimmers.

We didn't like the warm lights. They made our white valances look dingy. Much preferred the bright white. YMMV

Our old '89 GV now has warm white LEDs along the ceiling in the FL fixtures and cool white up under the valances (great for watching TV. The warm whites are 600s and the cool whites are 300s (I am guessing but apparently the number of LEDs per five meter reel.) I have much more light from the 600s than the 300s.

The warm white 600LEDs 5 meter reels I purchased from Amazon for $18.99 a reel. Connectors extra for $2.99 for 10
The cool whites were $5.98 a reel.
To mount the light strips in the fl housing under the valances I ran the LED line down to the end and then back on the opposing flange and insured them staying put by using 3M spray adhesive because I had originally mounted the lights up by the ceiling and therefore ruined the 3M tape when I took the lites down.

Tom,

LED dimmers...  Tried all of these.  Lots of other choices.

On/Off set level and it remembers it.  Soft blue illumination when off. $45. Pricey. In the main living room area.  Relay that shuts off ceiling lights when slide is in buzzed when dimming lights so I just bypassed it.

Lighting EVER RF Dimmer of LED Strips, LED Ribbon, LED Lights, Wireless Control

Off/On turn to set level $25. This is a nice solid device.  I like the feel of this one.

Key fob on/off and adjust level.  It has a little power box. This one is in the bedroom. Main switch on/off.  Key fob lets us adjust level and shut it off remotely.
