M11 Oil Capacity Update

Recently, we had a discussion regarding the proper amount of oil for the M11 engine. We had opinions that varied from 30 to 43 quarts. I had been filling mine at the lower range of these numbers, right up to the dip stick full mark. After Cummins advised me that my pan held nine gallons I drained, filled the oil filter and added nine gallons. I let the engine idle for awhile and then cool. After an hour or so, I scribed the dipstick at the new level which is 1/2" higher than the stock full line. Then I knocked off the idea from other forum members and installed a slobber tube can to catch oil if the M11 started puking it at this new level. I've now put 1,200 miles on this oil. The level is still exactly on my new scribe line and there is only faint residue in my tube can. At least for my engine, I'm going to say this is the proper level.

Also took the opportunity to install a Fumoto drain plug. I always wanted one of these things although now I see what the worry is about it hanging down. I'll avoid tree stumps and hope it doesn't fall prey to a road gator.

FYI, Compact style Femco quick drain plugs do not hang down. We have them on our Cummins and Isuzu drain pans.

Jor,

A timely post!  I just ran into the exact same situation with my "little" engine.  Since we bought our coach last November, the indicated oil level has been about 1/4" below the "FULL" line on the dipstick, and has never varied.  Which is good!  Yesterday I performed my first "do it yerself" oil and filter change.  Drained the oil, pulled and dumped old filter, filled new filter with about 2 quarts, installed.  According to the specific data for my engine (found at Cummins QuickServe Online), the pan should hold 16 quarts to "FILL" line, and 20 quarts to "FULL" line on dipstick.  I was getting short on time, so I just dumped in two 2.5 gallon jugs, started engine, let it idle a while, shut it down.  30 minutes later, checked level.  Shows about 1/2" high (above the "FULL" line), just like yours did.  I am going to follow your lead and install a puke can on the overflow hose.  Will drive it a while, and see what happens.

I've read that it does not hurt a thing to run these engines with oil level a couple quarts below "FULL".  If my engine, like yours, does not blow any oil out the overflow, then I will assume my oil fill @ 20 quarts was correct (for my engine).  Next oil change, I might use 18 quarts, which should put me right on the "FULL" line on the dipstick.  This level should be fine for the engine, and will simplify reading the dipstick for myself and anyone else looking at it.

Damn, Barry, I bought the wrong one! Think I'll replace it next change. At least I get to drain the oil without the slop on my hand! Thanks for the tip.
