Cummins 5.9B Engines Used in U225 Foretravel Coaches Model Number

My second thermostat in our U225 has gone on the fritz. When I stopped at the big Cummins repair/parts facility just SW of Spokane, WA the guys told me that I needed the model number or serial number of the engine in order to get the right part. The number is apparently etched on the "front" of the engine behind the radiator. Well the front of our engines are the back just ahead of the radiator and I am not at all certain I can get to the place in order to see what the number is.

Nothing in the manuals.

Nothing on the placard but the VIN number and build number.

Cummins though Foretravel could correlate the identification of the engine by the VIN and/or build number so I emailed them last week but haven't heard anything from them (or any indication that they got or read the email) so I'm asking here.

Does anyone know:

1) The model number or a serial number for any '93 U225;
2) The correct part number for the thermostat for that engine?

Cummins people assured me that the thermostats were quite different depending upon the anticipated use of the engine and were reluctant to make a guess. I am wondering if the Cummins shop that changed my thermostat last year made a guess...

Craig, the serial number for my 93, U225's engine was on the engine brochure. It was a paper back book about 5" X 7" as I recall. I don't know whether it was printed by the factory or was hand written by the original owner. I am pretty sure FOT will have the serial number in their records. Call James Triana or Mark Harvey. I'm confident that they will respond.

The EIN  Engine ID Number is on a metal plate riveted to the front gear case, visible on same side as the fuel injection pump.  Very needed number.

Craig, You probably will have to open the bed to see the engine #.  It will be on the street side, at the rear of the coach mounted on the plate that separates the gear case and the block.  Usually mounted sidewise and hard to see but it is there.

Looks like you got the info. Re emailing Foretravel, I tried it a couple of times. Same non-response. I suspect that they are like many others; the programer puts an email comm function on the page but no one is resposible for monitoring it.

Thanks, Dave - and everyone - I think this will probably do it. My build is 4177 which I suspect is close enough. I'll go over to the coach when I get a chance and check on it. Gotta get the MH working or we can't get to Quartzite even if the DW gets the time off.

If you create an account on Cummins quickserv, you likely can look up yoru engine serial number by VIN number. I know the two were linked for mine. You also probably can look up the PN for the thermostat and find one from another source.

Just be aware that the EIN 44636039 listed thermostat and gasket is correct, however IF your EIN is different, the part numbers could be different, why having the correct engine number is SO important.
Provide your engine number, will provide the thermostat & gasket part numbers for it.

When i purchased mine as a preventive measure I wanted to know the numbers and i could not find it anywhere. To change the engine bay insulation and clean around the engine I removed the spring shocks that hold up the bed which let me push the platform up more. By doing this and knowing where to look for from data a gathered "google" I was able to see it and i was able to take a picture of the data plate. Before i washed down my engine the plate was dusty and could not be read.

First of all, thanks for all the replies and help. As usual, this forum is specific and knowledgable!

I emailed Foretravel but did not get a reply... until this morning. Jeremy at Foretravel emailed me back with my engine's EIN. Now all I have to do is toddle off to Spokane and buy one.

Even though it's been pooh-poohed on other forums as mostly irrelevant, I am firmly convinced that you are much better off buying a coach that has a builder who is still in business. And in business with people who have been working there for years. Even though FT was sold some years back - and we know there were some issues after the tranfer of ownership - the basic business AND PEOPLE remained. This is invaluable and a huge marketing advantage.
