HELP-Stuck with Stop engine light

We had the stop engine light stay on after start.  We shut down the engine and now it won't turn over at all.  Any help out there.  It is Sunday and the various repair facilities around us are not open.  We are stuck at a fuel stop.

What year coach and which engine?

If Cummins, you can pull the engine codes yourself

Stella,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.  While we wait for the smarter members of the forum to notice your post, it will help if you can give as much detail about the situation as possible.  I see from your profile you have a '95 U320, and your home base is La Conner, WA.  Are you in that area now?  Reason I ask is to see if any other members might be located nearby.

Other helpful info might be like what were you doing immediately before the stop?  Any unusual sounds or instrument indications before the fuel stop?  What was fuel level before stop?  How long since you changed fuel filters?  Is the fuel station a big truck stop, or a small station?  Are you blocking the pumps at this time?

Sorry to sound so nosy, but the more info you supply, the better the chance of someone making a "long distance" diagnosis.  Will check back soon after I do some research...

So you tried a re-start, and when you turn the key the engine does nothing - is that correct?  What does volt meter on dash show when you turn the key?  Did you try the remote start switch in the engine compartment?  Just thinking out loud here...

I had a similar problem and it was bad connection on my starting batteries.

Can you start your generator?  If so, start it, when it is generating power flip on your boost switch and let it run for 5-10 minutes, then try to start your engine with the boost switch still on and generator running.  If it starts, you will have a check engine light due to low voltage, but you should be able to move away from the pumps and to a safe place until Monday.  This worked for me and I hope it does for you too.

Then have your starting batteries, cables, etc checked on Monday.

Good luck

Happened to me this past September. There seems to be a built in delay, suspect in ECM, that has to time out prior to letting you restart. Delay on mine, albeit not a FT but a Cummins none the less, was about half a min. Just turned the ignition off and waited then voila, the beast started up. Hopefully you're under way by now.

Had that happen to me, It was a bad ground on the ground cable on the start
battery.  Loosen the ground cable and clean and retighten.

Thanks for all the input.  One additional thing I failed to mention - when we turn our key to the start position the volt meter drops to zero - almost like a direct short somewhere.  I don't know if we have two problems or one.  Any more thoughts?

FYI - we are at a fuel stop outside of Tucson, Az.  Thanks again.

Could be bad connection from your starting batteries?

Did you try running the generator and using the boost switch to start?  If it starts, then batteries, cables, or something is the issue.  If not, could be starter ( most likely batteries or ground cable).

Good luck

We had the same symptoms and it turned out to be loose connections on the start batteries.

More on engine light and no start

Thanks for all the input.  We have a 95 U320 with M-11 Cummins.  After our fuel stop, we started and the stop engine light stayed on.  We shut down and upon trying restart the engine would not turn over and the dash volt meter dropped to zero.

We tried using the boost with the same results.  We are in the truck park part of the fuel stop ourside Tucson, Az.  I checlked the battery terminals and they seem to be OK.  I don't  know if we have two problems or one.

Again, any help would be appreciated.  We spoke with the local Cummins guys, but of course it is Sunday, so no help until tomorrow and then we would need to tow it - ouch!

Just spoke to Stella (Teresa) and was happy to learn that they are back on the road and all is good.  They will be posting later, when they get settled for the evening, but the Forum answers gave them exactly what they needed to trouble shoot and correct the problem of a loose connection.  Good Job, you guys!!!!!

Hey everyone,

As Carol said we were able to fix our problem and are good to go now.  We pulled all 8 start battery connections, cleaned them and re-installed.  Also checked the connections on the starter and solenoid.  Also found a loose connection on the connections forward by the water pump.  Hate to admit I'm not sure the nomenclature there.

We really appreciate the quick responses and help.  If anyone is ever near La Conner, Wa (in the summer) look us up.

Thanks again,
