she no start...

At the rest stop just north of Albany, OR mp 242 southbound i5 waiting for a Coachnet tow. Stopped for the night but this morning the Cummins 5.9 will crank but not start. Spent the morning chasing down possibles (fuses, bad wires, etc) to no avail.  Finally called for help.

Do we need to disconnect the drive on an Allison 643?

Oops tow is hrre. Gtg

My old 270 would not start and it was the engine position sensor. Would not open the fuel solenoid up.  Hit is with a shot of ether and it started and drove to cummins.

Glad you got a tow, now we need to know why.

Craig,

Cold weather has nabbed you. I don't usually use ether in normal weather but John's suggestion is OK for a cold engine. Never use on a warm engine.

That would NEVER happen to any of my engines.  IMO that is bad news for an engine.  David

Better off using WD 40, yes you can use it to start a Diesel engine, have done so many times.

Many engines come from the OEM with either kits for cold weather starting. If engine has an intake heater, it's not a good idea though!

I've used wd40, carb cleaner, even gasoline.

Oh, and to provide help to original poster, could be lift pump or stop solenoid...or dirty filters/fuel supply problem.

A wiring issue left over from the electrical fire in the engine room 18 months ago. Got 'er stareted and frove to their shop in Corvallis where we can check further tomorrow. Got 30-amp power at least so won't freeze to death tonight. Hope to get over the Siskiyous tomorrow. No tow needed.

Craig,
Glad you got it running and to a shop.  Nice thing about those mech. engines, not much to keep them from running.

Update: we are hooked up to 30-amp at Bob's Towing in Corvallis,  OR waiiting on a fuel fitting.  The no-start issue was a faulty crimp done while we were repairing all the burned wiring last Spring. Then we noticed a fuel leak at the top of a filter housing.  It's part of the high pressure fuel system and the new part should arrive from Portland tomorrow at 10am.

Weather is cold but not as cold as it is 100 miles east (on the other side of the Cascade Mtns). We're warm and dry and even tHe cat is enjoying the adventure.  Hope to be across Siskiyou Pass tomorrow and into N. California.

More issues...still stuck in Corvallis, OR

Bob's Towing told us yesterday about 2pm that they had to order the replacement fuel line from Cummins NW and that it would be coming from Portland (over 100 miles  away). But they actually ordered it from the Cummins NW shop in Coburg, OR only 30 miles away. If I had known that I would have driven the toad over to get it. They also said that it would be here about 10am.

No part yet (2:45) and it's New Year's Eve. And Cummins NW has been closed since at least 1pm.

No tracking number. UPS has no idea if anyone at Cummins NW has put anything on a UPS truck for Bob's Towing in  corvallis.

Cummins NW wants an emergency charge to tell us where the part is even though their search result on Google says their open today til 5pm. AND they are closed 'til Monday!11

Cummins NW is the only parts distributor for Cummins in WA and OR so I can't just go buy a part ffom someone else.

One week in cold Corvallis on Monday.

I'll let you all know how this shakes out.

Craig

Craig, It was nice talking to you this morning. Sure seems like when things go wrong, they just keep coming. Maybe there was a reason that you didn't get on the road when you predicted. If I can do anything for you this weekend I am just a few miles East of where you are at. Just call.

Well it's clear no part is going to arrive today. Maybe Monday or Tuesday. Shameful customer service. On the part of Cummins NW but they do not have to provide good customer service since there are no options but to deal with them in WA and OR.

I tried the local Dodge dealer (whose employees are working today) to see if we could not come up with a fix. Their parts guy tried his best but the 5.9 engine in the Dodge pickup trucks of that vintage are configured differently.

We will probably go back home tonight or tomorrow in the Jeep and come back when the coach is fixed. It will be 8 days of our 3-week time and will probably scuttle this trip. :(

That sucks that you can not get a part. I know that travel on a holiday makes for some issues but the fact that you can not source a part for that long is wrong.  Oh well, I am sure it will not get better complaining about it. Hope you have a great new year and that the next trip is easier. I will be back out that way some time this year and I will give you a heads up before I leave.

Sorry to hear you are stuck and down.  In 2013 we were stuck at the coast with a bad exhaust manifold.  We needed parts that were in stock in several Cummins warehouses.  We were lucky to be able to order parts by 9PM, on a normal week day, and with a 10% up charge, get next day by 10AM delivery.  Your timing is terrible, end of the year, short work day, holiday weekend, and more to add to your issues.

Hopefully you might still do the rest of your time scheduled and get yourselves somewhere for the next two weeks.  Know it might not work to get to AZ, but maybe treat this set back as a foul wind, and just change course a few degrees to a new port of call.

The place we're  at - Bob's Towing - is the sort of business that does what you pay them to do; period.

It became clear to me that my part - ordered on Wednesday - was not going to be delivered on Thursday but the idea of calling Cummins NW tp see if it had made the ups truck and if not could I drive 30 minutes down I5 to get it was completely novel to them. And while they had said nothing further conversations elicited the news that parts often arrived late by a few days yet they never bothered to share that earlier with a customer trying to get away from sub-frseezing temperatures.

And if no part showed up by Monday morning they would send a driver to get it - 30 miles away - if I wanted to pay for that.

Any movement on thizs at all was only in response to my pushing and prodding with o ious reluctance. I was not paying them to make phone calls or track deliveries, after all.... they were doing what they were being paid to do. No more....

Well shoot.  That stinks and answers the eternal question "What about Bob?"  I know it won't do you any good now, but next time.....I've had fabulous parts service from Cummins Southern Plains.  Not one but two turbos ordered, standard shipping charges of less than 10.00, and both times they showed up next morning after order.  They also give you 10% off for Cummins Powerclub membership, and no hassle returns and credits.  Even though it's in N. Tx (their distribution center), I bet they would get a part anywhere in the US in a couple days max.  Their parts guys are mucho savvy.
