Speedometer Sender

I replaced the speedo awhile ago but wasn't able to test it until now. The new one does the sweep action when the key is turned and displays the programed mileage but doesn't do anything when driving. I don't have the manual for the Allison 3060 trans. Anyone know where the sender is located? Thanks.

John, have you set the correct number of pulse's for tire size and rotation.

 The sender is on the transmission housing in the center.

Thanks, Bill. I didn't realize that. Yesterday, I called Lauterdale Speedometer and got the instructions using the little button on the front of the speedo. I'll likely do the calibration next time out. I might, however, send it back and have them do it as they can input a mileage figure closer than my initial guess.

To set the tire rotation/size correctly, you have to follow a very specific procedure while running a accurate measure mile.  When I had to replace my speedometer I also thought is was the sending unit, until I found the right calibration procedure....    ^.^d

Exactly what the speedo guy said. It registers both mph and miles; I had the pickup wire on the wrong terminal before. (looking down at the speedo induces dyslexia) Also, the schematic shows the pickup wire running to the Allison ATEC box. Anyhow, should work when I do that calibration. For future searches, here are the steps as explained to me.

Mark off a known mile on road.

Push button in and turn key on. It will display "Auto Cal"
Release button
Push button and start to drive (it will flash "start")
Drive 1 mile
Push button. It will display numbers like 29,000 and "test mode" and needle sweep, then display accurate data
That's it!

We replaced a VDO electric speedometer on a fire engine this week. It required some kind of a code from the manufacturer to get it to work. I wasn't directly involved so I don't know the specifics. It looked exactly like the speedometer in my U300 with the possible exception of the connectors on the back. It surprised me that it needed a code, that's the only reason I'm mentioning this. Contact the manufacturer to find out if this is the case with your speedometer instead of beating your head against the wall. The speedometer on the fire engine hasn't worked for many years even though a previous mechanic replaced it with a new one. He didn't know there was a code required. I didn't know that and the other mechanic here currently didn't know either.

When I installed the new speedometer I used gps and went one mile and set the VDO highway markers seem to indicate it is accurate.
