hydraulic oil cooler leak

I am in the process of putting in a fuel cooler on my 98 U320 and when we pulled the grate off we noticed there was a collection of oil soaked dirt around the hydraulic cooler connection on the bottom forward end.  No drip, just this collection of dirt so it's been oozing for some time.  The oil/dirt goes up the cooler a ways and all over the hydraulic line and connections.  So it could be leaking from up above in the cooler itself or maybe if the connections have been oozing for a long time maybe the oil has just worked it's way up there.  In order to tell for sure the hydraulic cooler has to come out which means dropping the whole radiator stack, a very big job.  Has anyone out there had a similar experience?  Has anyone had problems with the cooler itself leaking from above the connections?  Any known problems here?

Before you drop the radiator, I would clean up all the fittings, than drive a few miles and check.
As for fuel cooler, on my 2001 320 the cooler is the first cooler behind the grille on raditor.

try brake cleaner.  The oil film should melt off.

I've had this seepage for 9 years with no change.  I just clean it up once a year.  James T confirms that it is not worth throwing money out.  Apparently the seepage occurs when parked, not underway.
