Not being an owner of a coach with the newer electronics so not an expert. BUT, I would pull over at the first safe opportunity and then go back and physically check and look things over in the engine compartment. You don't want a fire starting!! EVER!!

May not apply but in our 99 U270 we had the check engine light come on and we were told to turn booster switch on. Apparently the batteries had gone too low and the alternator could not keep up.
Ask others, but might be worth a try after you check oil, coolant, etc.
Good luck.

Just so you know, on my 98, I can cut one of the wires to the buzzer.  It is not a correction of the problem, but helps with the darn noise.

The code you are describing is related to the speed sensor on your engine. While it is safe to proceed, basically the ECM cannot tell that the engine is running. This can effect several issues like ABS and the alternator. I would surely ride with the battery boost switch on and keep speed down to a safe driving speed on the highway. You will surely need Cummins to properly diagnose the problem since they (Cummins) have their own codes that you cannot pickup with regular diagnostic units. In your destination area, there are several Cummins dealers. When you call a Cummins dealer, ask them if they have RV overnight stay areas with electric. Many do now. I just came from one in Arizona. Also, you can subscribe to Cummins Power Club while at Cummins for $19 and get a 10% discount right away. Worth saving some money.

This may or may not help with your situation. I offer it because I know what it is like for that BEEPER continuing to beep.

I had some work done and when I went to leave, the yellow check engine light and BEEPER came on. The owner then started it by turning the switch to on (which momentarily turns the idiot light on). He then waited for the idiot lights to go off. Now, he turned it to start, and the check engine light (and the BEEPER) did not come on.

I do not know why that worked, but it did and made me happy, especially after paying nearly four coach bucks for some service work.

Good luck,

Trent

Thanks everyone for your input. We are safely stopped in Greensboro for the night . I finally got a Cummins tech on the phone and he was of little to no help. Sooooo I elected to continue and monitor the situation. No problems what so ever. We will see the Cummins folks tomorrow and I will report there findings. Also we are scheduled for regular service at MOT in February and I am going to have them install some sort of switch so I can mute that @#$%^&*@ chime.

As for the chime: I put a piece of blue painters tape over it. I just thought it was way too loud, and the tape allows me to still hear it as it is good to have when your coach is trying to tell you something (like when my air pressure fell without me noticing one time).

Best of luck diagnosing the actual problem.

Chris

On edit: on our coach, the chime is inside the dash, kinda to the left and below the tach, as I recall. Just lift the dash and you'll find it.

It is a known issue we have all had. It is in the ECM and to prevent the truckers from going to fast.  If you are running down hill or you hit a bump or your rpms go up too high then  you will throw that code. I had my over speed sensor disabled at the ECM by cummins. It is put in for fleets and they were surprised to see a MH with it.  They programed it out and it was fine. Now the other thing is that it could be is your road speed sensor and if your main seal leaks a bit it can leak on that sensor and cause it to fail They have similar codes and you will need to get that fixed at Allison but Cummins will tell you when you get there.

This may help I had a similar code last summer.  The Cummins folks said to turn the ignition on for 30 seconds , not try to start and then back off. Then start my code disappeared.  Try it you have nothing to loose.

Good to know I will try that in the morning.  John S also good to know . Thanks everyone for your  input. It is a sick feeling sitting on the side of the road , but great to know that a mobile  hot spot and a lap top can get such an abundance of help from this wonderful forum. Thanks everyone.

Dang it ... missed you guys by a couple of hours out at Mustang.  Ditto on the 30 second ignition suggestion.

We're out of here tomorrow too.

Last year I had the dreaded check engine light on for 100 miles until I got to a Cummins Coach Care.  They diagnosed the problem as shorts in the wiring harness between the ECM and the main fuel pump.  Easy fix- they traced and cut out the shorts- spliced in new wires, rebundled, tested, etc.  Using my Cummins Power Club I was out the door for under $600.  Stayed the night there as it was after 10 PM when we backed her out and then went on the next day.  I was pleased with the diagnosis, service, and results.

Hope your problem is found and solved so you can get back on the road.

OK here is the rest of the story. Started up this morning NO light. Arrive at Cummins Eastcoast  at  0900 and am told one hour til a tech can run codes. At 1003 a tech knocks on the door plugs in and it shows a 242 code ( invalid or inappropriate speed signal) just as John S described.  Cleared code buttoned up and ready to go at 1020. Here is the best part, wait for it, wait for it. NO CHARGE !!!!! Yep life is good !!!

I had a similar issue, don't remember the exact code, but it had to do with transmission/engine speed mismatch. It was really annoying. The wait 30 seconds after turning on the ignition solved my issue.

You will get it again until you have cummins program it out.  SO next trip there have them do if for you.
