ATS - Automatic Transfer Switch - Secondary Relay - Install

Thought I would add a short write-up and pics of our Install.

The install of this device is not difficult as Brett indicated, but for those of you that have not done this I thought this write-up might be of interest.  It is not a step by step procedure but is an overview of what we did and is offered for Reference Only. 

If you do not feel comfortable working around electricity you should contact a qualified electrician/RV Service provider.

It has been suggested that when working on this switch not only turn off the pedestal power but also unplug your EMS/Umbilical - probably a good suggestion.

Note:  It appears that I misspoke in that the Esco ES50M-65 unit we installed does not have "enclosed" contacts.  The reason we chose this switch is that replacement parts are available to repair this unit.  I could have used the internal switch in our Magnum 2812 but did not want to run new wire, if required.  Path of least resistance.  On further thought I probably would have been better of replacing the Relay/ATS with a Marine type rotary switch and completely eliminate this switch.

Good write-up and good job in fixing it.

Were the fluctuation so fast that the digital meter "averaged" right past it?  Did you try an old analog voltmeter?

I did a lot of electrical trouble-shooting in a former life and it did not take me too long to realize "auto range" was not my cup of tea in some situations. In service work, I carried my new Fluke and my old-time voltmeter, just in case.

I used both digital and analog meters to try to evaluate incoming voltage fluctuations.  The fluttering was sometimes occurring very rapidly and am not sure if the digital or analog meter could "see" the voltage changes. 

The final determination of replacement was based on the Inverter Input power would no longer stay in contact and relay/transfer power to the Breaker Box when the Shore/Generator power Input was not energized.
