Using rare earth magnets on RVs

James, borrowing Susan's laptop:

The magnets to hold the cast iron griddle to the wall under the sink that Susan already posted has worked really well.
As she mentioned, I've tried a bunch of other projects using so with success, some with issues. I love the durability of them as a solution,  I need to write us some of the details and post it, maybe tonight I'll get a chance to do some documenting.

I'd love to hear where others have used them too though? Given the number of creative folks here, I'm sure others have used them effectively in ways I haven't even considered yet. :-)

I've used them VERY effectively for fixing one of the spring catches under one of the can storage pullouts in the kitchen. It kept popping open going around curves, so I screwed in a countersunk hole rare earth magnet that pull the latch UP when the pull out is closed. Works perfectly, you'd never even know there was a problem.

I TRIED using them to hold a cuttingboard to the underside of the kitchen table, but vibration tends to pop them just far enough for gravity to take over. Sudden crashing of cutting board into the cat food/water bowls while driving is bad. Very stressful for the driver. NOT recommended. :p

Although, I've been toying with the idea of adding some velcro over the magnet to keep it from bouncing loose like that. Magnets are MORE than strong enough, just susceptible to vibration/sudden jarring loose.

What about you all? How have you used magnets effectively?

James, here is my go to place, LeeValley.com,  where they have lots of magnetic things and much more.

I use one of their refrigerator magnets to locate hidden steel structure in the coach.

Been considering converting my windshield cover from snaps using them.

I epoxied a couple on the two bottom corners of the kitchen window.  When the mini-blinds are down they keep the blinds from making a racket when driving down the road.  I like how it's automatic - no need to remember to raise the blinds or lock the bottom into clips.

James borrowing Susan's laptop again:

The kitchen blind is a great idea. :-)
I'll have to try that one, we mostly keep it clipped in, but having it free would be a lot better esp to keep it out of the splash zone when washing dishes etc in the sink.

I've thought about using them on the front windshield. I HAVE used them as an emergency fix for the cover of the big double fluorescent light fixture in the kitchen. Attached a couple of those right angle edge joined washers ( FT uses them to mount the upright sections of the window treatments ) to the inside edge of the light fixture and then screwed the magnets to the cover in place of the shattered plastic and brass clips that were there originally. I've since figured out that you can drill a hole in the tops of the plastic columns of the clip and reattach it that way. But Magnets were the quick fix when it came down during a really bumpy trip through a park.

Also have a pair of REALLY heavy countersunk hole magnets that I have in reserve for future projects. They also come in handy for  locating steel frame members in walls when mounting flip up desks etc. :-)
