Stop Engine Light, Engine shutdown light

My 1998 U320  flashed a "Stop Engine" light and then the "Engine Shutdown" light last week .  We had spent three weeks at an RV park and needed to move the coach back to my SIL place about 10 miles north of the park

The first time the stop engine flashed was about 2 minutes after we started down the road.  The light was only on for about 30 seconds and then went off.  Five miles  down the road the engine shutdown light came on, but there was nowhere to safely pull over.  Oil pressure, transmission and water temp were all normal, so I continued the remaining 3 miles to my SIL's house with the Engine shutdown light and alarm beeping..  When I pulled into the driveway and stopped, leaving the engine running, the light and alarm shut off.

I checked the coach today, Oil and transmission fluids were fine, the water level in the expansion tank was very low, but when I removed the cap on the main coolant tank it was full ( a little coolant spilled out).  I added a little water to the expansion tank and started the engine.  It ran for 20 minutes or so and the stop engine light came back on and a few minutes later the engine shutdown alarm also came on.

A little recent history.  We bought the coach last September and have driven 5000 miles or so.  Trip from Arkansas to Albuquerque and back to Arkansas.  We are now on Pine Island near Ft Myers FL.  The coach sat from mid November to early January until we moved the 10 miles to the RV park and then back to the SIL's house.

I have not added any Biocide to the diesel fuel since buying the coach.  Could a clogged filter cause the faults?  What else should I check?

I assume a fault code will tell me more and that is my next step.  I thought checking here might be helpful as well.

Thanks in advance

Open the drain on the bottom of the primary fuel filter (engine OFF).

That will tell you whether it could be a clogged fuel filter issue.

I had the same problems with mine a few months back. Turns out it was a  coolant level sensor going bad. It only acted up after it got warm and was intermittent. Replaced it and no more problems.

Thing is, until you get the fault codes we could speculate until the cows come home. For the price of one hour labor at the Cummins dealer here I bought a scan gauge d  so I could read the fault codes and keep up with a few gauges. Hopefully I'll upgrade to a VMSpc one of these days.  Let us know what you find out and good luck.  Hopefully it's something simple.

Mine too was a coolant level sensor.

I checked the fuel filter,  the diesel was clear pale yellow, no sign of algae growth.

I pulled the fault code this afternoon.  I think it was a 141, but not positive.  The interpretation that I have found online said that the yellow light would flash once and then the red light would flash with a second or two between numbers.  I got 3  yellow flashes and and a red light at the last yellow flash, then 4 red followed by a single red flash.  I guessed this to mean a 141 = oil pressure sensor.

I tried a couple times after this first reading, but could not get codes again, not sure what I was doing wrong.

Question.  Will any of the OBD2 code readers work to pull codes on the M11 engine? Will I need an adapter or something?

Thank again for your help.

I pull it with Silverleaf but there are other ways but they are not free.

Scan Gauge D (SG)  arrived today.  Can someone help me find the underdash connection?  Is it supposed to be in the area under the lift up dash?  Or underneath the dash looking up from the floor?  I couldn't find it.  Do others have one of the rectangular type connection on the left side bottom edge of dash?  I wonder if the PO modified the connector.

Anyway I connected directly to the port at the ECM on the engine, which is not going to be permanent, but allowed me to read engine data.  No stored codes, but I ran the engine and got the Stop Engine warning light.  Oil pressure at Scan Gauge read zero,  Dash gauge read 40 psi.  Light went out and SG read 30 psi.  A few minutes later the warning light came back on and SG read zero again.

I am assuming the pressure sensor has likely gone bad, correct?

Look just left of steering column under dash. About where your left knee would be....or least that's where mine is at. Round with a cap on it.

Should look like the one on the right, I believe

ECM and dash gauge use different sensors.  Yes, replace the ECM sensor.

Bernd completed the mission

Steve read first post in the linked thread.

My sender went south left me stranded in a parking lot. (Better than the side of the road)  My repair was the on / off mentioned in the thread. I use VMSPC to monitor my oil pressure so I never searched for the 5.9 sender. Reading the first post will clarify what I'm saying here.

About the data port. I have both. The rectangle type and the round 9 pin. Both are near left knee while sitting in drivers seat. I'm assuming it was a mod by the PO.

Just a quick update.

It was a oil pressure sensor that went bad.  I bought a Cummins branded replacement sensor off of Ebay.  It has a 1-1/16" hex head.  So I bought a set of deep sockets to use to change it out.

The original sensor is 1-1/4".  Unfortunately the diameter of the socket was too big to get past all the other parts to reach the sensor.  I fought this repair for a few days,

I then ordered a 1-1/4" Crowfoot wrench and got the bad sensor out in about 5 minutes.
