Extended warranty - to buy or not to buy 2007 Nimbus 336

Hi there,

We are in the process of purchasing our first RV from Foretravel consignment.  The coach appears to be in very good condition with 62k miles.  We have been offered up to a 4 year warranty and wanted some feedback if the expense is worth it.  For the next 3 years we will be weekend warriors maybe up to 25 days per year.

Could you give us your thoughts?

Thanks,
Kath & Mike

Check the fine print, I'm not a big believer in "extended warranties".

There is about a 40% profit to FOT to sell one of these. 95 people out of 100 are better off not buying. The other 5 might be happy they did, if there was an expensive problem. Word travels are built with the highest quality systems engine and transmission that exist at the date of manufacture. Negligence or accidental damage are not covered by the policy. They usually have a pretty large deductible. And depending on the company they can be difficult to collect on, significant back by the claims department when you do make a claim.
I never buy them except the square companies offering more big-screen TVs at Cosco. By the way that is the only maintenance insurance plan I have ever seen consumer reports recommend. So if you can stand a $5000 surprise you're probably better off keeping the money for the maintenance insurance policy in your account. It is unlikely that you'll see a problem that would be more expensive then the cost of your premium.
That's my two cents. Your mileage may vary.

Well, what would any good discussion be without an alternative viewpoint to confuse the issue.

I have never been a believer in buying extended warranties. I changed my tune when it came to buying our Foretravel from MOT in 2015. I fully believed in the quality and strength of the Foretravel after having done a ton of research. However, there were just too many complex (to me) systems for me to get a handle on covering them myself. I got the most coverage I could get, going with the company (Cornerstone) that MOT worked best with at that time. I did that because I strongly felt I was going to have all maintenance I could done at MOT and wanted coverage if something happened away from MOT.

That plan has worked extremely well for me. I have had to have a number of big and small components fixed or replaced over the past two years, and that says nothing negative about Foretravel. Indeed, I am constantly amazed at the sturdiness of this coach when looking at SOBs. That said, stuff happens. It has been as painless as it could be, especially given I have all my work done at MOT. They handle all of the processing and provide me with two copies of each service visit--what was covered by the warranty and what was not. I have never spoken to the warranty company. My plan has a $200 deductible for any combined work order, and it is transferable to the next buyer. I'll be looking at a replacement when it runs out in another two years. Probably won't be Cornerstone, since they have already lost money on my coverage.

Can't comment on plans offered by FOT, but my experience at MOT has been exceptionally good.

Sorry for any confusion, but hope this helps.

We too have purchased extended warranties on both of the Foretravels we have bought...one from MOT and one from FOT.  Both of the coaches were 9-10 year old when purchased and we were the second owner of both of the coaches.  The first one was our very first Motorcoach and we broke even with the costs.  We still have approximately 2 years left on our second one bought through FOT.

We have had no problem with either policy in getting items covered.  We have most of our service done at Foretravel and they have taken care to deal with the insurance company.  But even when we have been in other service bays with a covered item that company has not had any problems with the warranty.  We have been pleased.
