Engine, transmission gremlin

Hi Everyone,

Looking for some advice.  We just returned from a trip to Banff.  The engine would lose complete power and start over heating, we would pull over.  Turn the engine off.  Start up again and everything would be good.  During this time, our transmission retarder was working intermittently.  Idea's?  All the fluids are good.  Coach ran great coming up the ice fields.  Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.  I am going to take it to the shop this week and have the codes checked.

Matthew,

This seems to indicate that you restarted the engine shortly after you shut it down, compared to having to set an hour and then restart.  During this time did you get an alarm on the dash?  Apparently the dash gauge was indicating that the engine water temp was high.  It could be something as simple as an engine temp sensor failing thus giving the ECM false info causing the EMC to cut engine power, if you were able to restart shortly after you shut down this reset the ECM and sensor thus letting you go some more. This could also cause the trans. to not function properly as the trans. ECM talks to the engine ECM.  If the trans. retarder actually overheats it should just cut the retarder output and not effect the engine.

Now if you had to set an hour or so before you could move then that could be something all together different like a water pump not pumping for some reason or ?    You were looking for "ideas"  this is just a couple of WAGs but I think ideas and wags are 1st cousins.

Mike, based on your experience level, I would automatically upgrade your ideas to SWAGs.

Just a thought, but is the retarder operating when you don't have it selected??  An electrical Gremlin, maybe??  Has all the symptoms.
