Budget Dash Camera Review

There have been some Forum discussions about Dash Cams, but not recently.  I just purchased one and thought a "User Review" could benefit others who might be "shopping".  This is my first dash cam, so I have no objective basis for judging quality or value.  However, the one I chose seems, to me, to deliver excellent performance for not much cash.  Since this was my first foray into this market, I sought a simple inexpensive device, without all the extra-cost features or capabilities.  The camera I purchased seems to meet this objective.

You have to be careful when buying this type camera.  The available quality ranges from worthless junk to professional grade.  It is best to select a product (and seller) with predominantly high ratings by a large number of recent customers.  After some due diligence research, I settled on a camera called the Black Box G1W-CB, most commonly sold on Amazon:

Amazon.com : Black Box G1W-CB "Black Bezel" Capacitor Model Dashboard Dash...

This is a basic no-frills dash cam - 1080P HD, 2.7" screen, capacitor (instead of battery), and supports up to 32Gb Micro SD card.  It is dead simple to operate - take it out of the box, insert the memory card, connect the power supply, and it starts recording!  File output format is .MOV which works great with my Mac computers.  The TFT screen is sharp and clear, and the simple menus are easy to navigate.  The supplied mount is very sturdy, and sticks well to the windshield glass.  For my initial test, I mounted the camera in our car, and left the settings in "default" mode.  After we drove around town and returned home, I popped the Micro Sd card out of the camera and inserted into my computer.  The files can be viewed without requiring any extra software - just click and play.  A 5-minute clip is 481.5 MB (at highest quality setting) so I figure the 32Gb card should hold about 66 (5-minute) clips or roughly 5.5 hours of video before it starts automatically "overwriting" the oldest clip.  Good enough for my purposes.  I was quite impressed by the high quality of the video!  I will include a link to a 5-minute sample below so you can judge for yourself.  I plan to install the camera permanently in our coach, and will post another sample clip after our next test drive.

About the sample clip:  It is LARGE, so if you are on a "tight" data plan, you might want to skip it.  It is a 5 minute clip - the first 50 seconds we're just sitting still while I monkey with the camera settings (Sorry, I should have edited it. ).  Once moving, watch for me nearly rear-ending a Prius (because I was watching the camera).  Also, at the highway on-ramp, notice the cop car parked in the grass on the left side.  The cop was helping a guy put out a FIRE in the bed of his pickup truck.  Never a dull moment in Midland, TX.

This is the first dash-cam I've seen that is capacitor powered; well, not exactly powered by a capacitor. If you want to record or have it auto start, you actually have to plug it into your cigarette lighter. The capacitor will hold settings for somewhere between a couple days and a month (depending upon the reviewer).

I am thinking of buying this to replace the one I use now (bought 3 years ago); there are quite a few bad reviews so the manufacturing process might be spotty in quality but they seem to take returns well. As long as it is capable of recording a license plate number it should do the job.

Thanks for the review. :)

You are correct, Craig, the camera is "powered" by the lighter plug cable (I edited my post above).  The capacitor only holds enough juice to save the last clip (whenever power is cut), and to maintain "settings" when power is off.

I am almost finished with the installation in the coach.  I mounted the camera in the upper left corner of the passenger windshield (near the center divider).  I ran the power cord out through the defroster vent on the driver side and over to the camera.  It all looks pretty clean, and didn't need to drill any holes.  I wired up a female cigarette power outlet in the overhead compartment on the driver side.  I found a 12 volt supply wire going to the controls for the roof-mounted spotlight.  It is only "HOT" when the ignition key is in "RUN" position, and it already has a 20 amp fuse, so I just tapped into that wire for my "hot" lead to the power outlet.  Other lead taps into a nearby ground wire.  Camera power adapter is plugged in - turn the ignition key to "Run" and the camera comes ON - turn the key to "Off" and the camera goes OFF.  ^.^d

Photos to follow after a test drive.

Which act is that?  They would have to be "doing it" (whatever IT is) 10 or 12 feet directly in front of the coach when the big engine is running (see wiring description above).  Not too likely...

Didn't get out for a test drive today, but here are some installation photos.  This is the best location I could find for the camera.  It needs to be high up and centered to achieve the best coverage.  The dark tint at the top of the windshield, plus the center divider, make this a bit challenging on our GV.  I think this will work fine, but if anyone else comes up with a better position, please let me know!

The high definition dash cams (with GPS built in) have many other uses. The resolution is razor sharp so you can use them as a camcorder or for still shots. The menu allows many different settings. A big drawback is the absence of a battery, so here is what we bought.

A 20,800Ah battery with a lighted LCD percentage of charge window, two 5 volt USB ports, 1 amp and 2.1 amps, mini flashlight.

With this battery, you can run a dash cam all day, charge an iPhone, iPad or Droid tablet, plug it into a computer and use with Skype, view on HDTV with HDMI cable, etc. Has microphone but not stereo.

You can view just the video or with their app, the video with a Google map showing your driving, flying or walking location in a sidebar to go along with the video.

Put the battery in your pocket and you can clip the dash cam on yourself as a personal camcorder.

The dash cam records in .MOV format so easy for older computer to process the video.

Read Amazon reviews before ordering as many companies lie about battery capacity and quality is suspect.

Unless using it, I keep a screw off plastic bottle top in place as a lens protector.

I bought a SJ4000 camera and have been pleased with it.  It has motion detection and I simply turn the camera around on the dash and set it for motion and it will act as a camera if it jiggles at all.
Problem I am having now and most likely is due to my limited electronics capacity is that I have good video but it contains a lot that is not useful.  For instance, a school bus ran a stop sign in front of me but I have the whole 10 minutes and the only useful part is that minute or so at the stop sign.  I need to learn how to edit this stuff.

Gary,

Does your camera have a adjustable "loop" setting?  On mine, I can select 3min, 5min or 10min.  I have already decided the 5min setting is too long, for exactly the reason you have stated.  I have mine set on 3min, which is a much more manageable length.

Mac computers come standard with iMovie application, which has basic editing functions.  Pretty intuitive and easy to use.

Windows should have a similar program, but it's been a while since I used that operating system, so I don't know.

Chuck, Yes I can set anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes.  After 32mg disc fills it loops back and starts again.
I have not been able to find editing stuff in Windows 7.

I am mostly happy with the SJ4000 Dash Cam that I bought    but  I now have a lot of video and am struggling with how to edit out the unwanted portions.
I am using MS Movie Maker just because it is free but it is not working well.  Very time consuming to download the raw footage, then reload into movie maker then edit.  There has to be a better and faster way.

I use VLC to view any format video on our Macs. If you have Windows, you can also download VLC (free) and then edit your clips. Go to How to create video clips in VLC - CNET  for a couple of short tutorial paragraphs for Windows 7 users.

VLC downloads for almost all operating systems: VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

Mac users can use the free iMovie Apple app with not much of a learning curve.

I have a Vacron camera in the CRV.  It's been in use for a couple of years every day.  Thing just works.  Chops vids into 1 min segments and stores them on a 32 gig card that can be played full screen on any video player that can show .ts like VLC Player.  Stores last segment permanently in event of collision.  Also has a software program that shows the video and speed/ direction info as well as the vehicle traveling along a Google map.  (Need live Internet connection for map).  Pretty cool.

We have that same camera and have been quite happy with it other than one issue.  It seems to be very temperature sensitive.  If left in the windshield (which is the normal position) when ambient temperature is high, or in the sun (again high ambient) it shuts down until power is restarted.  Other than that, it works very well.

A year ago I posted a review on a budget dash cam, the Black Box G1W-CB.  I thought it might be nice to update my old review with a current report.  The news is all good!  My inexpensive little camera is still working perfectly, and I have had zero problems.  I can still recommend this camera without reservation.  The price has even come down $10 since I bought mine, and the 32GB memory card is also cheaper.  If you want a dash cam, and don't want to spend a lot of money, I would say give this one a try.

I do have a couple pieces of advice to anyone contemplating the purchase of this particular camera.  First, make sure you only get it from the "Authorized" distributer of Black Box products.  There are cheap rip-off copies of this camera out there, and they are not all the same quality.  If you buy from Amazon Prime, you are most likely getting the "good one", and if you DID happen to get a lemon you are safe knowing Amazon will always cheerfully refund your money.

Second, there are two different models - one has a rechargeable battery, and the other has a capacitor.  I bought the capacitor model a year ago, because it was supposed to stand up to high heat conditions better.  It works fine, but has one drawback: if you don't exercise your coach fairly regularly, the camera "forgets" it's programing items, including the date and time.  So then you have to reset those items when you go to drive the coach.  I finally got around that problem by wiring my camera direct to a "battery" power source.  The constant power supply keeps the memory intact, and when the camera is turned off the power drain is negligible.  I just manually turn the camera on and off when I want to use it.  If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased the model with the battery, and taken my chances with heat killing the battery.

In fact, that is what I just did!  I liked the first camera so much that I just bought another one to use in our car.  This is the battery model, so I just plugged it into a "Ignition" power source.  So far it is also working perfectly.  The quality of video is really quite amazing considering the low price.

I will post two links below - one is for the capacitor model I purchased originally, and the other is for the battery model I just bought.  Be sure you also get a 32GB memory card - that is the largest card supported by the camera.
