Insulation around the rectangular metal ducts of dash A/C passenger side

We recently had a new locking system installed that required removing the front panel (which has 4 registers – 2 bottom registers are connected to flexible ducts with zip ties and the 2 top registers lay flat against insulation glued to the metal duct exterior rims.

The insulation is toast and I have successfully removed all of it. It appears that some kind of tape (double-sided?) was used to secure the original insulation to the rim of the ducts. I tried ordinary double-sided tape and was unsuccessful. I am using 1"x 1" A/C weatherseal insulation normally used around window A/C units. The weatherseal does not stick to the double-sided tape!

Before trying to glue the insulation using

, thought I might ask for help. Anyone know what is used or has anyone done this to theirs? What did you use?

Eureka! I had a vision (not really) but had an idea. Gorilla duct tape does stick to the insulation so I used that and then pasted the duct tape(non-sticky side) to the rim of the metal duct with double-sided tape. It does not require any strong bonding since when you put back the panel the top registers hold everything in place.

I'm a happy camper.
