Power Tech - Kubota Engine repair

Looking for a service facility to check our Power Tech generator with Kubota diesel engine. Starts with white smoke then dies when under load. Traveling from Mackinaw City through Wisconsin towards Montana.

Any suggestions on service. Does not appear to be any service dealers in the norther US.

Could be clogged fuel filter (Foretravel is known to install a primary behind gen box hidden on fuel line) or fuel line with crack letting air in.  Are you seeing this shut down after it has been running for a while, because it could be caused by failed glow plugs not getting cylinders hot enough and then when it starts, not letting it run a while to heat the cylinders so the fuel burns when injected.  How about clogged air cleaner.  Diesels are pretty simple, just give them air and fuel and they are happy to please.  Are you low on diesel in your main tank.
Leaking fuel line can be diagnosed with a can of diesel and a temp hose up to fuel pump.

First check all fluids- including coolant.  If you are low on coolant it will shut down- safety device to prevent you from burning up the engine.

Hope you get it worked out and continue on your trip.

I would concentrate on fuel line sucking air. As posted above run a fuel line into a container of fuel. I had the same symptom's when I bought my coach and new fuel line solved the problem.

Generator starts but puts out white smoke and runs until transfer switch puts it under a load. RPMs at startup sounds like it is idling as opposed to running at a higher RPM. Smoke is actually a dark white if that makes sense.

Air filter is new and looked ok.  Two fuel filters changed in the last 2-3 months at Foretravel.

cynjac, We had similar symptoms with ours and the cause was a restricted air intake. It sucked insulating material over air intake. FOT installed an elbow on intake to prevent happening again.  Good luck!

Like craneman, my kubota was smoking and cutting out, new fuel line and runs like new! Also I found a sensor leaking on the back of engine where its hard to see. Replaced it and no leaks. It might be worth looking back there to see.

Currently in Hancock, Wi. for a few days. Plan on looking at the fuel line in the next couple of days. Air intake seems to be ok as far as I can tell without pulling generator out.

Will post when I get that accomplished.

Last week, Propman called me with a problem, rough idle, and low less than 90 volts output, and smoke.  He found his insulation had fallen down, and was blocking the intake snorkel on the back rear side of the generator.  Once removed, to be replace after his trip, it ran fine.

His coach is also a 2003.

Been under the weather the last couple of days.

Can I get to the intake snorkel without pulling the generator?

I pulled the insulation out from the top of the generator. It was mostly on the top of the motor. I could feel the intake line but not enough to get the the actual air intake point.

The fuel line to the fuel filter in front of front axle visually looked ok around the filter connections. Does the fuel line from the tank come off the top with a drop tube or from the 1/4 mark? Does it share a feed line with an aquahot?

Also, I have been following the dynagen thread in a more recent thread.

Yes

On our coach ('97) No they have separate pick up tubes.

"Can I get to the intake snorkel without pulling the generator?" Yes you should be able to see it at the left back corner.

I had the same issue "white smoke" is starvation of air

Check to make sure it can bread without insulation is blocking it.
