Garrent turbos are good units, HOWEVER, we had a "re-built" installed (from a non-factory outlet) and she still smoked as much as me and my Kools. We limped it back to my main man in Seattle, who pulled the whole top end off: I took the pump, injectors and head into town, all the above was fine, injectors needed cleaning, head had a loose valve adjustment, pump was fine. So, my buddy and I are staring at the now-opened top end ( you could have eaten off the jugs) and saying "WTF could be causing this?" At the same time, we looked at each other and said, "BAD NEW TURBO?" Yup, best we could figure, the turbo had sat on the shelf so long that the seals dried up! Garrent sent me a "new turbo", but guess who paid for all the hassle & labor?
It could have been far worse: we were able to stay, plugged-in, at my pal's place. Imagine what fun it would have been at "Bubba's Discount RV Repair" ? Another plus (gasp) was I knew I had a fresh top end!
