95 Allison MD3060R leaking fluid

yesterday I discovered that my 95 u240 with a MD3060R allison transmission was 2 gals low on fluid.  I have not had any leaks in the past.  The fluid would not touch the stick.  I put 2 gals of fluid in and checked the level and it was in between the run hot marks.  Today I discovered that all of the fluid had ran out on the ground.  I looked and found a 1" hole just above the ID plate on the drivers side.  Something must have been in it.  The hole is smooth no threaded.  Here is a pic.  any ideas what was in it?  why did it come out, and many other questions.

If I remember right, it is just a rubber plug that you tighten and it expands, should be able to pick one up at a Allison dealer, I think it allows the dip/fill tube to be installed on either side of the case.

John is correct, if you are not close to an Allison dealer you can get a rubber expansion plug fro any NAPA store. That would get you to the Allison store.

Thanks for posting that info. I will put that on my to do list to make sure that mine has not gotten old and hard. If Napa fails you you may be able to get a cork at Ace Hardware.

Not trying to flame you 48 but it looks like your trans has a thick coating of grease ,oil and dirt,to the extent it may be causing
the trans to run hotter, every degree towards cool helps. You may have to take a scraper to get it off then degreaser.

Since the alternate dip stick location hole (that is what it is) has been open for awhile, I would change fluid and filters after driving a few more miles.  No way dirt did not get in there.

Thanks for all the replies.
This is a story for doing some of the maint. on the MH yourself.  I am going on a little 4 day run and was changing the oil and filter on the engine,  when I also checked the tranny fuild level. Nothing touched the stick DRY.
Allison dealer in Lufkin,TX was told by Allison about the dip stick location issue and now I have got an Allison replacement part on the way, be here on monday.  Yes Wolfe,  I don't even know when the problem happened.  I look all the time for leaks under the MH and I never have even a drip anywhere.  Yes John I agree with you about the grease and dirt.  Like I said I never have any drips, but for a long time, around the big hoses at the back of the retarder, it is always wet looking.  I watch the tranny temp and engine temp all the time(a lot since the new engine rebuild) .  My tranny has never ran over 200 deg.  It goes up when the retarder is being used, but never over 200.  Amazing if I had not checked the dip stick level, I would not have know that anything was wrong.  Tranny shifted and worked fine.  I was noticing that the retarder light on the console did not come on sometimes.

Likely the reason Pat does not see tranny temps over 200 is that Foretravel put the dash tranny temp gauge sender into a drilled & tapped hole in the large return line elbow FROM the tranny cooler.

We wanted to know tranny temps, so we drilled and tapped a hole into the OUTPUT elbow, plugged the original hole, and moved sender.  Now we see the quick rise on mountain descents and quick cool at the bottom of the hill.

I had occasion to tell a Foretravel tech about our sender relocation and his reply was 'you will be frightened by what you see'.  I guess he figured it better to hide the true temps.
