You all have a warped sense of humor.  :P  But I appreciate the responses, nonetheless.

We decided to remove the mysterious bar on the bed platform.  It was held in place by 2 phillips screws.  Bed platform vacuumed, mattress rotated, mattress cover laundered, bed skirt in place, fresh sheets and duvet cover.....sweet dreams.
