Rear Camera/Air Intake (split from Re: What did you do to your coach today VI)

When I bought the coach, up by where the camera is, the plastic was broken and I got around to fixing it today. I also used a rubber sealant where the camera is in-between the outside glass and inside panels that I could reach from the inside of the coach. I wanted to make sure this area stays dry. It was only 38.00 for a piece of metal which I cut and bent. I also drilled holes for air flow which is hard to see in the pictures.

It is difficult to see and understand exactly what you did, but did you determine the cross sectional areas of the original and replacement panel holes to assure adequate air flow capacity?

Ditto to Neals comment. I enlarged the picture and too me there is way too little
cross sectional area for air to get to the engine. You may find very quickly that it shows signs of starvation. How about a good picture and close up to make sure. I would also use fill in flash.

If you have the air cleaner,at the rear of the coach below the hyd fluid resevoir the intake is above the ressevoir on the left corner
of the coach, that's how mine is set up.

Good morning,

I will get a better picture today hopefully. Everything seems to run efficiently, no heat issues or slow spool of the turbo. I drilled quite a few holes for airflow, but, as Neal points out, I could have done the math to see if I am close to original.

John 44, the air cleaner is at the rear under the hydro tank.

I really started this project to keep water out and I have seen some of the mods in here and thought it was a good idea!

Roger and Susan,

Thank you for the message, I will look further into air flow restriction, so far, so good although I have not traveled far lately.

If you have an intake 3 feet above your left rear docking light (10"x5") it's a moot point.I recently added a camera and the "vent"
is only for air expanding in the void behind the camera.

Hi John,
One needs to be careful with that information.
I don't know when FT changed the air intake design, '97 maybe?  In fact, until you mentioned it, I had thought that all 1995 to 2000 Unicoaches had fake intake vents on the sides.  I do know that from '98 and on up, the rear side vents are fake (no opening whatsoever into the air system or even the rear cap area) and starting in 2001 and on up, the fake vents disappear altogether.

Will post a picture but this is not the vents that are on both sides and have some decals on them. You can trace the air intake
piping above the water seperator and see it goes above to the corner intake vent and no further.Believe me on mine the
camera vent is not the engine intake.I think for whatever reason Foretravel used whatever styles/part number they could get for
the air filter housings and built the intakes around the housing.Iv'e seen some air filter housings that are in back but are
orientated lengthwise, mine is widthwise.I do have a left rearmost side door but it opens to a empty space.
Cube, you need to make sure which intake you have,if yours is at the camera area then I think you need to open it up.

I think we've got two different things being discussed. The "air scoops" have always been fake probably from another time and place when fuel was cheap and it looked neat. The air intake on my '96 295 is about 2/3's of the way up above the left fake scoop. really need to be careful with this stuff since someone might misunderstand and do some damage to their system.

Cube, can you trace the piping from your air cleaner to where it goes to the outside,if it indeed goes to where the camera is then
you definitely need to enlarge.

Does this mean the air is drawn from the engine compartment or is it actually connected to a plenum that is fed from the slots in the rear cap behind the camera?

On our 1995 U320 the air is drawn in through the holes on each side of the rear view camera.
