Cummins Fleetguard LF140000NN Oil Filter

Yesterday the coach got it's first oil and filter change since we purchased it.  The local Cummins distributor used a newer model (2015) oil filter than the one that came OEM.  The new filter is the LF140000NN or 4367100.  I found a dealer service bulliten directing that this be used instead of the filters that had been used in the past.

What I find interesting is the definition of duty cycles:

Recommended Service Intervals
■ Light Duty: >7.0 mi/gal (2.98 km/L)
Replace every 35,000 miles
■ Normal Duty: 6.0-7.0 mi/gal (2.55-2.98 km/L)
Replace every 25,000 miles
■ Severe Duty: <6.0 mi/gal (2.55 km/L)
Replace every 15,000 miles

It's interesting that light, normal and severe duty are defined by how many MPG the ISX, ISM, QSX, QSM or M11 achieve.  I'll be lucky to get 35k miles on the coach before I'm too old to drive it, and annual oil / filter changes will be the course.
Nevertheless I often see references to "severe duty" and always wondered how that was defined.

Yesterday they also used a newer model fuel filter and fuel / water separator but I haven't drilled down into that yet.

Mike,

We need to be sure for what model year ENGINES those extended intervals are recommended.

Both Cummins and Caterpillar continue to recommend annual oil changes in the maintenance seminars they present.

Changing filters on a time basis never made any sense to me.  Oil changes maybe, if confirmed by analysis that additives were indeed being depleted with time.

This could get crazy-- Brett replying to Brett:

While there is some support for miles only to determine oil change interval, if the coach is sitting in a humid environment (like the eastern half of the country or Pacific NW) moisture in the crankcase DOES degrade oil, even if never used.  It is NOT the same as keeping oil in a sealed container for 3 years!

Yes, Brett.  I agree.  With those of us that are rolling most of the time, Fuel throughput(i.e. average mpg) is probably the best measure to use.

Brett W.,

Hope you didn't think I was advocating extending oil change intervals in my original post.  What I meant to point out was how "severe, normal and light duty" are defined.  Just a point of curiosity.

However, following up on your excellent point I did some more research on extended oil changes.  The attached is from Cummins QuickServe and is specific to my ISM 450 RV engine's serial number (a Cummins QuickServe login is needed to access the page):

102-002 Maintenance Schedule

This seems to support what's been shared by Cummins during presentations (none of which I've attended) and general consensus on our forum.  The extended oil change intervals in the original post from the oil filter data sheet apply only if you drive >=8,000 miles per month!  As you point out, Brett, it may vary based on engine year and/or serial numbers.
