Odor in closet

We are newbies.  The closet where the black vent pipe goes through has a definite holding tank odor.

I searched the forum and think our problem may be the air admittance valve.  But I can't figure out how to get to it.

We have no odor under our bathroom sink.  Just in the closet.

The other option I guess would be a blockage in that vent pipe.

I'd appreciate help in solving this.

If you pull the closet lining you will find that valve. Pick one up at Home Depot. Had same problem.

If you have the corner cabinet behing toilet, the bottom base (inside) has to be cut out (use a box knife if not already removable) and it is below to left. Unscrew and check if rubber flap is curled slightly. I sometimes just pull that flap off the centre pin, clean it then reverse it and put valve back. They are cheap but you may not need a new one.

Do you have a false floor in the closet?  If so pull it up might be interesting what you find.

This is not the closet but small cabinet behind toilet. Closets usually refer to ones that clothes hang in (at least in Canada and Europe!!

Howdy Dougpad,  Your description indicates a leaking Air Admittance Valve.  Recently replaced several in our coach.

Yup - Doug has ID'd that as the likely problem, he just can't seem to locate the culprit and is asking for help on where it might be located (and how to access it) in his coach:

Open the first closet door, remove the panels in the rear of the closet, that is where the plumbing for the washer is located, if you have a washer replace the valve, if not remove the old valve and install a plug.

Here's what the closet setup was on my 95.  In this closet there were two air admittance valves, one for the black and a second for the washer. The first photo shows the floor and the terrible second photo shows the piping going up the back of the closet wall. As others have mentioned, there's another in some coaches in the little box-like cabinet behind the toilet (3rd photo). There's probably another air admittance valve under the kitchen sink.

If you want to make certain this never happens again I recommend you spend a couple more bucks and buy Studor valves which, I believe, are now available at Home Depot and maybe Lowes as well as online. Good luck

Doug's comment mentions the BLACK tank and the last few posts are talking about grey tank plumbing, and the piping that is hidden in what IS a closet.
I think one will find that no black plumbing is located in a "closet", but is in a cabinet (or behind or below said cabinet)
I stand to be corrected if proven wrong. The rest is fake news!!

Doug's comment mentions the BLACK tank

That grey tank sure can smell bad enough to be confused with the black tank - especially to the untrained nose.

James, going back to his first comment, it definitly sounds like he was checking behind the toilet and even mentions no smell in the vanity next to it (which would be grey water). This to me would refer to the toilet black vent.

Indeed, but I wonder if he mentioned the bathroom vanity only because most of the old posts you can search for on this issue state that the breather under the bathroom sink is the most frequent to fail, and so he checked that before posting.

Your coach floorplans shows a four burner gas countertop range.

Is it a auto spark ignition cooktop or does it have a pilot light?

Hi all,

Thanks for all the help.  Sorry I have not responded sooner.  I had an engine issue that trumped odor problems.  Happily the engine is fixed.

Now...on to the closet odor.  Since the odor is totally limited to the closet, I think my first step is to remove the panels and see what is going on.

If the closet vent is from the gray water, that must be the smell.

I'll report back once I take a look.

Glad to know help is available if needed.

Thanks again.

Doug, which "closet" are you referring too, as you mention in first post the  toilet?? Is the smell coming from the washer /drier location or behind/around the toilet??

Good news.  Easy access and found both air admittance valves.  Removed and inspected both .  Appeared fine but am going to replace since they are likely culprits.

Thanks again!
