Turn Signal Cancel Too Sensitive

When I engage the turn signal for a turn in either direction, the turn signal cancels with the very slightest turn of the steering wheel.  It's so sensitive that I need a 3rd hand to hold the wheel, work the retarder / gear selector and keep the turn signal going.  Anyone else have this issue?

You might explain why you are doing so many things at a turn-off or stoplight. I pay attention to how I'm going to make the turn, nothing else. ^.^d

Hey Mike!

The 3-handed thing was mostly meant in jest.  The question remains, though.  It's super-sensitive to the slightest movement of the wheel.  For example if you just give the wheel a slight nudge to ease into the exit lane, all cars and trucks I have owned left the signal engaged.  Normal turn cancel engagement in other vehicles happens at what,15 to 20 degrees of steering wheel movement?  This is more like 5 degrees or less.

I don't have a picture for show & tell but it sounds like the leaf spring that holds the signal paw in place is either lost some of it's tension or the little plastic holder it sets in has broken.  You have to pull the steering wheel apart to get to what I am talking about.  It isn't a big job just a lot of small parts that you need to keep in order.  I don't have a link to a print for your exact steering column but there should be one on the net somewhere that shows what I am talking about.

I think I had the same issue a while back. Check that the mounting screws for the switch have not loosened up.

Just kidding, Mark! Our's is a fresh unit and quits before I like it, but I'm old school. I do know our fresh Honda toad does the same thing. Dave Berry once said, "if the turn signals are on too long, the rig should automatically turn in THAT direction!

For Mark there is a gray plastic sleeve on the shaft that has 4 elevated lines on it that cause the turn signal to cancel. If I remember correctly you can see then if you snap off the plastic halves of the steering column. You can shave off some of the raised portion that is causing the turn signal to cancel and than the wheel can be moved without cancelling the turn signal.

To add to my post I believe there are actually 4 raised lines so one of then is probably right next to the turn signal switch to cancel if that one is removed then the wheel would have to be turned 45 degrees to find the next raised portion. Hope that makes it more clear. I know how to fix it but not how to explain it so it is clear to you.

Is it canceling in going right but not left?

If somebody popped off the steering wheel to "center it" during an alignment, it will make your turn signal cancel be far turning one way, and close the other.

I had to pop off my wheel and center it releative to the cancel mechanism and then I centered the steering by adjusting the drag link.
