Freedom 25

My inverter/charger has finally stopped charging the house batterys on my 1997 U295.  The big transister mounted next to the main circuit board has shorted out and burnt a wire feeding it.  I have ordered a new transister and will install it before I replace the unit.  If I can't fix it what are some of the better new inverters that are on the market.  Hopefully it will just be a plug and play swap out.  Any ideas would be helpfull.

Cheers,
Terry

Terry,

I would sure upgrade to a Pure Sine Wave inverter/charger.  Magnum and some of the newer Xantrex units would make the short list.

Hopefully those who have done the switch can give you how "plug and play" the change over was.

Another post recommended the Xantrax 3012 as plug and play.  That's the way I plan to go when needed.

For a U-270 and U-320 the Magnum MS2812 pure sine wave inverter is just about a drop in replacement.

I recently helped replace a dead original Xantrex Freedom inverter in a 40' U320 1997 with a Xantrex 3012.  The old inverter was in a cage hanging from the basement floor.  The cage was too small for the X3012.  A new cage was built, wider and taller (vertical) so the new inverter could be slid into place with the cage installed.  We built it so that the original bolt holes in the floor were reused.  12 volt wiring on the 97 was 2/0 cables . Used the two 2/0 cables for the neg side and made a new 4/0 cable for the plus side.  120 v wiring was reused but might be a bit undersized at full loads.

I went with a Magnum 2812. Replaced the 2 ot cables with 4 ot per Magnum instructions. Others have not replaced the cables without issue. If you go this route it would be good to buy the Magnum ME-ARC remote panel. I think the charger was a little over $1,500 and the panel around $200 at iMarine. You use the same data cable as your Freedom. Just plug it into the charger on one end and the panel on the other.
