DDEC/ Allison Codes

Frequently, I see reference to various engine/trans/system "Fault Codes." Where are the codes displayed? Is a special device needed to read tgese codes?

All advice appreciated!

Here's a discussion about fault codes - not current, but seems pertinent.

How to check fault codes?

Hope this helps.

Here is how to check them without a code reader. If You have No stored codes you will get a code 25 flash on dash light. 2 flashes followed by a pause and then 5 flashes. This only applies if you have a  electronic controlled engine . If you have a mechanical 6V92 this would not apply.

Our 92 is a HD 746 which is a four speed and is controlled by the ATEC system which is electronic. Not sure where you would read codes, my pro link 9000 reads for the 6v92 but not the Allison. At least as I know .

Randall,

Flip up the dash and look on the driver's side in the maze of wires, fuses, relays, etc and you should see two switches. One for DDEC and one for ATEC.  Turn the ignition on and flip on the switches one at a time to read the codes in a series of flashes. It will keep repeating till the switch is flipped off.

No Foretravel with a 2 cycle is mechanical. All DDEC II.

Jerry,
The codes are in reply #2 above.  But all of this information (and more codes, I think) should be in your Foretravel manual, assuming it got passed down to you when you bought it.

So, say you lose a hydraulic fan belt, the engine heats to 230-240 degrees and the DDEC goes into partial power for 30 seconds and then shuts down. The DDEC's memory will record that code and when you flip the little switch, the tiny light bulb will blink 44. In other words, it will blink 4 times wait a couple of seconds and then blink 4 times again. The code(s) will be stored until cleared by a tool like the Pro-Link 9000

If you have a ProLink 9000 like some of us, you can just read it out and it will also tell you when it occurred.

Jerry has copied the ProLink9000 user manual so it looks better than the original. Once you find/buy the reader, he may be able to supply the manual for a nominal fee. He even has a printer for the machine.

Randall,

They are available on Craigslist and eBay under several names and an incredible range of prices. The readers are about all the same with only a different name but a cartridge slides onto the back and locks into place. Snap-On finally bought the last company but does not support the 9000 at all. Nothing!

So, you need a cartridge for DDEC I & II or II & III. A good deal would be both cartridge and reader for under $100, and average deal for both under $200. They will frequently come with Ford, GM and MoPar cartridges. These cartridges are only about $10. CAT cartridges are expensive and the ABS brake cartridge is also rare and also expensive.

Here is an eBay page with some of the different names, etc. mpsi | eBay

There is one listed for $395 that will do the job but about twice what they can be found for if you keep looking.

They will do over 40 functions including fast idle, injector testing, codes, voltages, fuel temperature, history, etc. Also gallons of diesel used and fuel mileage since new, trip MPG, real time instant MPG, gallons since last fill up, etc. They only do 4 lines of data at a time so not like a Silverleaf readout. But, the difference is they can actually test and change parameters. They cannot increase injector time and horsepower!

Learn something every day on this site. Seen the switches but never knew what they were for or what they did. Have a MTB 648 4 speed and now will print out error codes and keep them with all the other manuals. Thanks to all

Here is a great source for explaining all about DDEC codes and how to retrieve them using the little light bulb or the ProLink 9000. Start with this page and then use the page numbers at the top right of the page to navigate forward/backward.
