Sealand Traveller low profile toilet replacement

I just discovered that we have a leak in the base of our or Sealand Traveller low profile toilet caused by a crack in the black plastic base near one of the 4 mounting bolts.  Apparently, the previous owner tried to fix it with silicone but it is leaking slightly again and the carpet on the box is damp.  I gooped 5200 on the cracked area but it still leaks.

So, what to do.  The model is a 511 and the specs match this found on Amazon: Amazon.com : Sealand 302651103 Traveler 511 Plus Bone Toilet : Boating Heads...

The measurements of the toilet seem to match what we have at:
Measures 14-5/8 inch in back height
Measures 13 inch in front height
Measures 20-1/2 inch in depth

I found the same thing for much less than the part I need for $239 which is a great price for the entire toilet (part is listed as costing $267 from Environmental Marine in Ft Lauderdale (!))....the part number of the toilet seems correct (Sealand 302651103 Traveler 511 Plus Bone Toilet) but the description and photo are incorrect if the Amazon description is to be believed.  That is at Adventure RV in Tennessee at: Dometic Sealand Traveler 511+ China Toilet Low Bone - 9.98

When we lived on our sailboat we often found that a new toilet cost much less than the parts and it was a smarter move just to replace the whole toilet...this looks like the same situation.  I am inclined to order the entire toilet for $239 if anyone knows if that part # (302651103) is a drop in replacement for a 1997 U270 36' Unihome toilet please let us know.

A couple of years ago we replaced our toilet because it wasn't holding water in the bowl. We opted for a slightly taller unit. If you are comfortable with the height you have, go for it. If you have average or longer legs, a standard height toilet might be more comfortable. Of course, you will have to make sure that there is no interference with cabinets behind the toilet.

Just a thought.

I am installing the 511+ tomorrow.  The bowl is deeper so it sits a couple of inches higher.  We have had several recent issues with the old and now a second leak.  I was tempted to rebuild it but the deeper bowl is something I really wanted.  When a man reaches my age a deeper bowl is appreciated.  I will post tomorrow if this is still running.

Thanks!  Please give me a report on how this goes...May i ask where you ordered your new head?  Also...hopefully the height is not much higher...looks like we have the same coach/same issue!

I purchased from PPL for 236 plus 10 for shipping to VA.  I believe it is two inches higher.

Base is available and is what we would replace.  We purchased a new exact same toilet, but found the porcelain part was a little higher in front and a bit too tall for comfort.  We ended up using every part from the new toilet except for the porcelain bowl which we reused.  New base does not have overflow holes so the two overflow holes need to be sealed with plugs Sealand offers.  We also poured a lot of silicone into the holes before plugging them to be sure no water get in.  The height change occurred about the year 2000 as confirmed with a Sealand service manager.  Also anti-siphoned/sprayer fitting is different between new & old porcelain, so the part that came with the new toilet won't work, but the correct 'long-neck' part is available and not expensive.  Our writeup is on BeamAlarm and Forum.

Adventure RV Sevierville, TN  is VERY BAD about delivering the correct stuff and has very bad customer service. 

After the delivery, they sort of don't exist.  No phone, no response to emails.  Small place owned by one person who does it his way. 

Try to return a big part that was not what was ordered...

Many have had bad experiences.  Check reviews before using them is highly recommended. 

Too many other places with good recommendations than to put up with problems.

After the toilet was removed, we also rebuilt the wood base, painting the insides and new tile on outside.

Carl  here are some pictures of the two toilets side by side. You can see the 511+ or H in this case is slightly higher and the bowl is deeper. That is exactly what I was hoping for because I do not like the shallow bowl of the original.

 The replacement is very  straightforward and is a drop in with the only nasty part been removing the previous seal.  The supply fitting going to the toilet was the only difficulty. The wings to tighten it to the supply port don't clear the hose fitting directly above it.  I had to remove the hose both to get the OEM out and new in.  You will need a 7/16 wrench and a small flat head screw driver and a small Phillips head screw driver. Dometic has posted a video to YouTube and there are several others out there.

 When I removed it I found that the wrong seal had been used in a previous project. Probably when the floor was done.  If you rebuild your toilet make sure you get the seal with holes for the drain holes in your toilet. If you look at the pictures you can see the two overflow holes in the old are absent in the new.

PS don't tell Steph it came in bone.

Thanks for that...and the excellent pictures.  We ordered the 511 from PPL but it will arrive after I redeploy back overseas...so my dear wife and a friend will do this project on their own.  Just so I am clear...does the new toilet come with the rubber gasket...or do I reuse the old one?  Also, is a wax ring...say from Lowe's needed or beneficial....looks like it's just a gasket.

Always use a new gasket.  And for the RV toilet only use the Sealand rubber gasket.  RV toilets don't use wax ring.  What about redeploy, are you military.

Like Barry says always use the seal from Sealand.  Yes it comes in the package and no wax.  The old one is still in place in the picture.  Best on your deployment...been there

Thanks for the continuing support.  I am a contractor over there.  My DW lives full time in our 1997 U270 and has done a good job of keeping up with the little things here in Athens AL.  I will be back in 6 months and if we don't take an RR to an exotic place will be taking a couple week trip in the MH.  Living full time in a MH is really my dream ... after 11 years full time on our sailboat and a year and a half living nomadically on a motorcycle to the tip of S America we find the living is easy in our Foretravel.  One thing you eventually learn is always get top notch equipment and take care of it.....this coach certainly fulfills that requirement.
