1987 Grand Villa 40' ORED Propane regulator questions

Ok, so I'm changing out a regulator on my propane, it was venting like crazy and I could for sure smell the LP even after doing water/soap test on all my fittings.  There was a smaller one that looks newer as if replaced recently and the faulty one is a larger one.  I'm taking the regulator to a propane dealer tomorrow to get a new one...... but is there a reason it's larger? 

2nd part, when I removed the reg there were two wires hanging right behind it, one red and one black that look as if they are plug in connectors on the end.  I didn't see them before I removed the regulator and don't know where they attach to.  any clues?

Single stage are shorter, two stage are a little longer. Make sure the longer one is supported at the end against vibration. Cost is about the same. Less than $25 should do the trick.

Big regulator goes to generator, small regulator goes to house stuff I believe such as furnaces stove fridge and used to have a solenoid valve connected an lpg sniffer/detector and a on/off switch inside my coach. My sniffer still works so it's still connected, others have removed the valve as the sniffer is problematic. My understanding is it's no longer a requirement to have.

Our Onan III gen has a regulator on it (lower right corner on the Onan gen frame. I ended up getting rid of the two regulators in the propane tank compartment. The 28 year old one AND the smaller newer one (it was leaking). Went to ONE regulator per my dealer's recommendation. I then reworked the piping to give me more room in the compartment. I had eliminated the solenoid a few years back. I added a shutoff to my quick connect line for my 25' firepit hose.
