Allison Touchpad when Cold

Does anyone else find their touchpad for Allison transmission stubborn to activate with touch when cold?

Can I replace just the touchpad? Or what is likely the cause of this problem.  In warmer temps it works just fine; however, when it's cold it might take 3 min and numerous attempts to get it in to gear.

Thanks Mr. Wolfe,

A common problem? Is it solid state switches or something else?

Yes, a "not infrequent" issue.

Black box to me.

I leave troubleshooting and repair up to John (link above).  That is all he does for a living, and has been doing it for a lot of years.  In the Ft Worth TX area if I recall correctly.

Did you look to see if any diagnostic codes are stored?  If not familiar with procedure, see link:

Allison Transmission Codes Manual

When we get into the cold weather months (like now) I keep a small electric heater sitting on the floor in front of the driver seat, and run it every night.  I have found that keeping the area in and around the driver instrument panel warm seems to keep everything "happy".  Also lowers the chance of condensation forming in any of the electronics when you warm up the coach rapidly - like if you started it up to travel when everything inside was chilled.  Not saying it's a cure-all, but I figure it doesn't do any harm.

John told me the later control pads are sealed and the heating is not needed and ineffective.  Not sure where the transition is but somewhere between the 93 and our 97 I assume
