Maintaining Wipers

The wife and I are running down to Athen Tx tomorrow for a couple of days to visit M&G Engineering to have a brake system installed on our TOAD (Jeep). Since we just picked up our Nimbus a few weeks ago this is like a shake-down run to verify a few fixes and see what else needs attention.

So... forecast is we'll have rain most of the day tomorrow and I thought it would be good to purchase a new pair of wipers not wanting to get caught with old crusty blades. i was able to get these locally from the RV storage place I keep the coach at a reasonable price. In looking at the old wipers on the coach it was obvious that the drivers side wiper isn't touching the windshield at all .. it's off the glass by about half an inch or so and would be useless  assuming the wind isn't going to press it to the glass while going down the road.
... is this normal?

I didn't see any way to adjust the tension or distance to the glass although I did determine that the drivers side wiper does not move freely at the pivot point such that the spring would bring it into contact with the windshield. The passenger side is in contact with the windshield and does move more freely although it too is not as 'loose' so to speak, as I'd expect it to be.

So, is there an adjustment or do I just need to apply a judicious amount of my favorite lube and get it loosened up?

Check where the shaft bolts to the windshield wiper arm if it's loose it will still operate but it won't hold it close enough to work. Or Rain-X is your friend.

Ahhh... RainX is a good idea in case I can't get it to lay down properly.

Dan, that wiper does need to touch the windshield.  There is no adjustment and what you will need are some new wiper arms and blades. Additionally, you will need a gear pully to remove the wiper arm from the post, after removing the nut. I would not try to pry the wiper arm off because you will surely do damage somewhere. Sounds to me that the previous owner did not maintain the spring in the arm with lubricant and now you have a very frozen arm. Good luck,

Come to think of it, I need to RainX before tomorrow's trip.
