Can't get water thru to fresh water tank, etc.

Strange happenings. hook up water the normal way. back in the engine compartment and to a faucet, and guess what? Can't get water past water heater, even after removing the check valve. Tried several times.
Does the check valve consist of a mushroom shaped piece, a spring, and a small pin that holds the spring on? Or has another part proceeded up in the pvc? To the point where my lines is blocked?
I have thought about back pressuring the line with air from up by the tank fill shutoff, but don't want to break a line.
Right now I can fill the tank thru the overflow and everything flows as they should by using the 12V pump.
Is there more to the backflow preventer than I listed above?  Maybe something that traversed up the line?
Desperate for help.

On ours the mushroom piece has a stem on it. The spring has a washer and then a keeper that holds them on the stem. Sorry that I don't have any pics. Ours may be different than yours due to we have changed ours out a couple of times.

Did the fill valve feel funky when you opened it, sometimes gate valve stems can pull out and leave the gate frozen in place. Whenever possible replace a gate valve with a ball valve.

Got the problem fixed while up at Jim Hogg!!
Opened the little compartment up front where the two valves are that control the fresh water in and drain. I took the fill valve off and hooked up the water supply hose to the line and "backflushed" the line. Got lots of calcium/lime chunks out--into a sock I put over the line end.
I put a new backflow preventer on as the old one had come apart. I think my pressure regulator didn't like the water pressure at the CG as it restricted the flow rate after I reinstalled it. It wasn't the problem of no water thru, as I had it out while diagnosing the problem.
Many thanks to John44 for his aid/suggestions, and look forward to visiting with him & his wife now that we are down here at Seawind RV Resort on Baffin Bay (SE of Kingsville, TX) . Real nice RV resort, and quiet!! Hopefully it will warm up a bit.
