Which transmission filters

Hi all- I am going to change my transmission fluid and filters this summer- been almost 80000 miles since changing over to synthetic.
I have read on the forum that now Allison is recommending using high capacity filter- makes sense. My confusion is that when looking at the Allison site they indicate that for my 3060 series transmission they have a shallow and deep sump ( 2" or 4") and they have different filter kits. I believe others have used the kit # 29548988 for their U-270, but how do I check to be sure that is the filter kit for my coach?

Ted,

Safest answer is to give the Allison dealer your transmission model and serial number. Found on a plate on the driver's side of the transmission.

Brett- thanks. I see on the Allison site that we can put our serial number in and get all kinds of information. I will get my serial number and try it when it dries out here................

One more transmission fluid question. The rig is parked at my place which is a real pain to get in and out of (cattle guard, 1 1/2 miles bad road). Anyhow, I would prefer not to take it out and drive it before changing the transmission fluid. Any problem just doing it cold? I intend to drain it from the bottom (fluid and filters) and use a drill motor pump to fill. Thanks.

Maybe some disagreement, but if it were me I would stall it watching trans temp and get it a little thinner.

Matter of fact, there's one a hundred miles up the road in Phoenix. I'll check with them on Monday before ordering. Craneman's site is the best so far at $240 plus $25 shipping. Thanks.

John, are you are asking if both the small picture and the big picture is the same product.
The Fleetrite ad is an example of deceit and confusion to me. The big print gives and the small print take it away. On the Fleetrite product the byline says Transynd, the label on the product just says synthetic and approved by Allison. The product label does not say Transynd. It may not be the same or it could be the same, and who guarantees that Allison does approve.
Castrol does make Transynd for Allison and it probably is legit.

No. The little photo is one of those "people who viewed this also..." Just wanted to know about the five gallon Castrol Allison Transynd. Thanks.

Ended up going with craneman's recommendation of six gallons from the DMAX Store. Left me with five quarts extra. Got the filters from RVChassisParts. With the rig up on 12" blocks (12" receiver extensions) a five gallon bucket just fits under the transmission.

One thing of interest. If you have an older rig (1996 or older) you should check the numbers on your filter housings as the older ones use a square cut o-ring. Some kits come with both round and square; mine did not.

One consideration is that there are a lot of knock-off parts being sold on line that aren't what they appear to be. For that reason I bought my filters from Allison at their parts counter for a price almost identical to RV Chassis Parts.

I agree. These are Allison parts, however. Packaging and documentation all marked with the Allison logo.

I see where you replaced the filter, but on the other side is another plate cover. Is that another filter location?

The kits I have seen have 2 filters,I was assuming he changed both,they are the same.

Correct. The Allison "filter kit has both filters and gaskets. This thread is the first I have heard about not having all the gaskets needed for all applications.

Two filters for sure. Just took the photo after removing one of them.

My Fortravel binder has a section which lists all the part numbers for the various filters. Is there a reason to change, if the original one has worked well. If they came up with a recommended replacement and no longer make the old one, I can understand that. As an example, my oil filter number changed from FL9000 to FL9070 and I found this out when I tried to order the replacement.

Not sure I would agree with that generalization, though agree it may be a good starting point.

Same thing happened to the Allison filters-- they were upgraded which helped allow for longer change intervals.

And, the correct engine water filter depends on the kind of coolant, and if the old generation "low silicate coolant for diesels with added SCA" it also depends on SCA concentration-- basically how much you need to add.

applies to all pre 1996 3000 series transmissions. Mine calls for Allison p/n 29548988 filters. That number has been replaced by p/n 29558118. The last (newest) number doesn't come with square cut o-rings for the 2 filter covers , it comes with round ones instead. Reading instructions it says for pre January 22, 1996 manufactured trannys having filter cover numbers 29507434 you must order square cut o-rings separately . Their p/n is 29501469.
