Aqua Hot exhaust

Once again crawling under coach (I think I need to put my bed under there!!!)  I saw that the Aqua hot exhaust was rusted out and
bent.  On our coach the exhaust goes forward then makes a 90 Degree turn and exits behind the front tire.
Two Questions
1.  Is there any reason I can't exit straight to the side of coach?
2.  IT has a muffler, Do I really need a muffler?

I wouldnt call it a muffler as it is a straight pipe.. I think it help push the exhaust down the coach when it has a angled tip.. chrome end is for looks mostly

Mine has what looks to be a muffler, About 8" to 10" long 4" wide and 1-1/2 " thick, that is why I called it a muffler.  It may be something else,  I'm new to all this and I appreciate all the help everyone has given . 
If I can use a straight pipe that is even  better.

I had a Foretravel tech recommend getting rid of the muffler. Also going to a larger diameter pipe. The fewer the bends the better.

Chris,

Replace with 2 inch exhaust pipe and a clamp at the heater.  Use straght out end or polished stainless tip 2 inches beyond edge of coach.

Locate end to suit you out from under any slide.  You may need a support at the end.
