Check engine light

Traveling to Texas and while in NM check engine light sounded and displayed. Pulled  over and shut engine down. All gauges showed correct oil, coolant, etc. Rig was running fine. Restarted After a few mins and light was off. All looked good. AFter 500 miles light came on again. Did the same by pulling over and stopping engine. Brake set each time. Again was able to drive where we are in Pecos. Have a call into M.O.T.  Any thoughts.

Were you driving through any water? This has happened to other members when senders got wet.

Not traveling in any water at the time. Very dry out. Both times I was in deceleration mode. (New to forum and they may be 2nd reply) Also on bumpy roads both times.

What, if any other symptoms other than check engine?  Any effect on engine smoothness, e.g., hesitation. Do you have VMSpc?  It will report codes for these events.  Invaluable.

It would help if we knew what engine you have in your coach.  When was the last time fuel filters were changed?  Clogged or clogging filters can cause this symptom and are the easiest thing to start with to solve the problem.

Best of luck                  ^.^d

Ted, they have a 2008 Nimbus so maybe a 600 cummins.
Will look at beamalarm to see if it shows engine. Looks like the 07 has a 400 or optional 500 so maybe same(not 600 like I posted)

I experienced a similar occurrence a while back with the retarder at highway speed.

I think this was caused by a temporary over revving of the engine.

I use a bit less retarder at these speeds since then and it has not been an issue.

Engine is a ISM500. The retarder was not used for the last 500 miles and no check engine light came on.
I am in San Antonio at the Cummins dealer who will check the engine codes tomorrow. Quite possibly the retarder as every time the light came on I had the retarder switch on. Thanks for the suggestions. I will post the results tomorrow.

Arrived at Cummins last night at San Antonio. They nicely allowed me to camp in their front lot. This morning a mechanic put the computer on and ran the engine test. Based on my observations of the heat gauge being up close to 200 and what the computer showed he believes it may be related to the solenoid on the hydraulic fans. He could not find any leaks and the hydraulic tank was full but suggested I have M.O.T check further on it when I arrive there May 16th. Cummins called this an OEM issue as they don't have the schematic for the coach and do not work on this particular problem. His explanation was that the engine turbo was blowing excessive heat into the engine and the ISM500 responded with the check engine light coming on. Did not know the fans are hydraulic vs. electric. The light has not come on in the last 1,000 miles and the temperature gauge has not been up to 200 degrees. Pretty level in Texas so far after leaving Marathon. When I get to M.O.T I'll see what they suggest. Thanks for all your helpful thoughts. John Leach

Fans are hydraulic.

And 200 degrees F IS, repeat IS OK and should not trigger an engine code.

May be the fan control solenoid, I am replacing it next week on my 2008 Nimbus.  It is a part you need to get  from Foretravel, it was custom made by Hydraquip.  My check engine light came on and off and my engine fan ran constantly.
