JC Refrigeration options

Country Coach friend Jim asked us for advice when he smelled ammonia from his 20 year old propane refrigerator.  Told him about JC Refrigeration whom he called.

Today Jim called looking for our opinions on all the JC choices offered, which I wanted to share with our Forum:

1)  Compressor 120-volt

2) Compressor  12-volt

3)  Propane – electric with Helium based refrigerant

4) Propane – electric with Hydrogen based refrigerant.

Looks like Jim is leaning toward 120-volt compressor.  That choice has advantages over our household apartment size refrig, due to not having to remove a window and not dealing with adding door lock, securing in place & sealing.  But electrifying a RV refrigerator does not have automatic defrost via a built-in heater.

We would have to know more about how they use the coach to give sage advice.

For example, if they very rarely dry camp, the 120 VAC compressor or even a residential refrigerator make sense.

If they stick with an absorption refrigerator, I would sure ad the ARP controller.  It both extends cooling system life (substantially reduces clogging/precipitation) but also reduces the chance of a fire as it shuts down the heat source if high boiler temperatures are achieved.

JC Refrigeration now has a conversion from absorption to a freon and compressor version turning your existing refrigerator to a residential running on 120 volts .  I have a few friends that have done this conversion and are very happy with its operation.  This conversion allows you to keep your original refrigerator.  I'm not sure if they are doing this conversion on the smaller refrigerators.  Everyone I know that has done the conversion have the larger absorption units.

Yes they have the smaller units as well.  We were waiting to get actual field usage data before ordering.  The install is very straight forward.  For our usage, the 12v is a nice option but want to see a comparison of the 120 and 12.  The initial numbers on the site didn't seem quite right.
