92 Unihome question?

Hello again, still looking at Foretravel and am currently looking at a 92 U300 with a Detroit 350, "E11" at the end of model number.
My question is everything I keep seeing says that 92's were side radiator. This one has a rear radiator.
Am I missing something or just confused?

Some of the early 92s had the side radiators. Still a good coach just a little harder to work on. Yours might have been a carry over from 91. Look at your built plate next to the driver's seat.

Different transmission and 50 less HP because of it. While it is a little harder to work on, it does not have the complex hydraulic fan system and all of the associated hoses, etc. That can be a big advantage as the coach ages and parts get harder and more expensive to find. Other disadvantages will be that is is probably not 102 inches wide and will have a transmission retarder instead of the Jake brake. I like the manual level controls much better than the HWH computer leveling. The switch on the dash says retarder whether it has a retarder or Jake.

Many people have no idea what they are selling.

To add to to that if it has a molded bumper front and back it should be a 102 wide 92 was the first year of the wide body.

300 hp 820 torque. Versus 350 and 1050 on the side radiators.

My understanding is the E11 is a 350HP Detroit and that what it is listed as, but it does have a rear radiator.

When you say rear radiator, do you mean at the back of the engine compartment or at the rear but on the side?

The 350 HP should have a Jake brake and WILL have the tall valve covers but NOT have DETROIT DIESEL in large letters stamped on the covers.

The 648 would not handle the 1050 lbs torque so there is just a firmware change in the ECU that reduces fuel from the injectors. This is also why Foretravel could no utilize Allison's six speed.

The more fuel you add, the more power/torque/heat you make. Below is a fire dept 6V-92TA on a dyno producing typical HP/Torque. The marine engines make even more.

The other photo is a 8V-92TA WITH the Jake Brake valve cover. Notice it has no large letters on it.

More HP will also shorten engine life a bit. When these go over 620 hp, the engine life is only 2000 hours or so and can blow up.

The radiator is at the rear of the motor. It does have a Jake and not the retarder.
I guess I was just perplexed because I saw many references to side mounted radiators on 92 Detroit engines and not rear mounted ones. This is a 92 for sure so I'm trying to figure out what it is.
I'm not at the coach and won't be till next week so I can't look at the engine for the lettering.

I like the "naked" nose and graphics...looks more modern, but not garish and overdone.

By the picture it looks like a 96" coach to me SAIB model. Rear radiator. Aisle down drivers side bath on passager side.get the specs off the plate and the build number

Stump, I posted the model number above. Bath is on the driver side, it is the walk through model. Has the Splendide washer dryer combo on the passenger side and queen walk around bed. I'm pretty sure it is a 102" widebody. I am gonna try and call FT and see if they can help me out with some info.

You can take a smart phone and take a shot of the data sticker on the side of one of the valve covers. It will give all the specs, options. Nice to also know which Allison it has, the MTB648 or the HT746 (higher torque capacity). Both are four speeds (that shift four times seeming to be five speeds but it's lockup).

Photo looks like 102" but hard to tell even on a big screen.

looks like the tires are just inside the wheel wells and more space between the front grills indicating a wide body to me.

Why didn't I think of that? Mystery is closer to being solved. Guess the Beam specs don't cover some models that were a one off. Good eyes Jerry! They made two 1995 U300s with M11 engines.

So I spoke with James at Foretravel and solved the mystery.
Original owner took delivery 11/91
It is a SE Silver Anniversary model (the A following WTB in the model #) that was special order with some changes.
The owner was a long time customer that purchased 9 brand new coaches over the years this being the last one.
It is the 350 Detroit with a rear radiator and Jake
It has a HT746 Allison Trans.
Air bag suspension
102" widebody (the W after U300 in model#)
Right now it has 53,000 on it and if it drives as it should I think it may be mine!

Cool!! Great Info. I see a Hp increase in my future now knowing the rear rad should support it. Check your Fan Blade and make sure it is not fiberglass. There have been issues with some of them coming apart and destroying he radiator.

Any suggestions on where would be preferable to do that. I hear there is another shop that opened recently in Nac. started by some former employees. Any feedback?

The coach sounds like a winner. A nine time owner probably took care of it well. I like the idea of the rear fan. Good to make sure the fan has been replaced with the upgrade. And make sure to only use low ash oil like Delo 100 SAE 40. Almost exactly $100 for 6 gallons. No Delo 400. Shell Rotella T1 #40 is OK but not as low ash as the Delo 100.

Stump, call around to see who can do it. Detroit Inc. won't go past 350 HP for the road unless you have a fire dept engine number. A marine Detroit shop might have an idea. Someone said Stevenson charged $5/HP to reprogram it up to 350 HP but that was a rumor. I did see a little box advertised that went in the cab with lots of HP settings but can't find it now. It just plugged into the ECM with the stock plug going into it. I can't find it now so perhaps the EPA had a long arm. Will post if I see it again.

I was looking at that coach on craigslist, I was wondering if it was a Silver Anniversary model, I was looking for the "angled" windows. Can someone point those out or describe which windows are angled?
