Safety checks for towing
I always check all my connections on the tow bar and baseplate before pulling out and at every stop before pulling out. I was taking the tabs off my Blue Ox baseplate when I noticed there was some play in the baseplate- should not happen. Being full time and in Missouri at that time , I decided to go to the Blue Ox factory in Pender , Nebraska. Pulled in to the campground, told them why I was there, got a space assigned to me ( free for Blue Ox customers) and soon the head baseplate guy came to the spot to talk about the issue. He saw it and said he will take it in the back, remove the facia and see what the issue is. When he found out what the issue was, Bob came up to get me and took me back where the car was. Several bolts were loose. He asked who installed it and I showed him the dealer sticker still on the baseplate. He said they would take care of it- new bolts, nuts, Loctite Red, upgraded supports for my Air Force One air hose and break away connection- all no charge.
Had them look at my 10 year old towbar for service and it is at the end of life, so I bought a new 7500 pound aluminum towbar.
Best part is they took off the old one and put on the new one right here in the campground. New safety cables, pins, hitch pins, etc- ready to tow another 10 years. Got a $150 trade in for my old tow bar. Great service from Blue Ox!!
If you are flat towing, add checking your baseplate to your check list. We don't want to turn one way and have our toad go another way.
