Replacing A Hose Fitting

I finally got to put water in the coach today and several other updates and wanted to check it for leaks.

Well I do have a leak and I have tracked it to the fitting behind the accumulator tank

I think I am going to have to replace this fitting, do i need to use a Dremel and a cut off wheel to cut it off and then replace it with a screw type clamp?

Steve,
It looks like one ear is broken off but that shouldn't cause a leak unless there is a crack that your pic. don't show.  The cone gasket that does the sealing can be removed and replaced if that is where the leak is. I always put in a new cone washer when I have to remove a fitting for some reason.  If you do have a cracked fitting then I would replace it with the same. The down side is you need a copper ring crimper.  Some like the slip on Shark bite fitting which don't need a crimper.

Well when i turned on the pump it can feel a squirt coming out of it.  When I removed the tank when I changed it out it was just hand tight so that is how I put it back but when i found the leak I tried to tighten it more with some channel lock pliers and with out much pressure it head a crack sound.  it was raining so I quit for the day

Sounds like you have a replacement of some type in your near future . Those fittings should be good and finger tight thus the need for a new cone gasket when disturbing one of these fittings.  You can get a direct replacement 90 fitting at the local home improvement store. (looked at them today)  They also have copper crimp rings in 10 packs.  They offer a simple crimper (which will work for you in this hole) and also a large pro style crimper.

Mike

On edit, If we have to make another flying trip to FTW this next Wed or Thur. I can bring one of my crimpers for you to use. You may go some other route with the shark bite push on style and avoid having to do the crimp fitting.

Thanks Mike, I will go look in the morning. are they 1" ??

I am leaving Thursday morning, with or with out the coach, and heading to Broken Arrow for the weekend, I was hoping to go from there to Wichita KS for 2 weeks and then back but that is only if I get the water leak fixed. "LOL"

All of my plumbing fittings are 1/2". The one in your picture looks like it's 1/2" too. Measure before running out and purchasing.

I 2nd Shark Bites. They are awesome but a little pricy but a little worth it. I'm surprised at how many small hardware stores carry them now.

Steve,

Your coach don't have any 1" PEX piping. As other have said those are 1/2" PEX

I just cut the old copper ring off with a dremel. I have used plain old hose clamps they work just fine. Shark bite fittings are the ticket as well. Use a heat gun to warm up the pex the fitting will come out easier.

Looks like I found my leak, off to town I go  ;)

In hind sight when I replaced the tank I saw that one ear was broken off the fitting, I should have just changed it out then but as we all know hind sight is 20/20  ^.^d

Clamps are a quickie repair, but not a permanent repair. They will eventually leak. Pex pipe is too hard to work well with clamps, and worse when it gets old.
I carry and use pex fitting's, they never leak, and are fool proof. The shark bits are awesome too, but as mentioned pricey.
These work awesome. Hard to find, but Ace Hardware carries them in every configuration.

These are just OK, prefer the one's above. But cheaper then Shark Bite's

I've heard on the internet (so take it for what it's worth) that people have had shark-bites fail over time and leak.  I personally feel the clamp ring and proper crimp tool is a much safer solution.  A water leak can be very expensive......

" I heard it on the internet, so it must be true"...LOL

Actually it's the other way around. My whole shop bathroom is shark bites, and is been that way for 10 years. It has 60 PSI. I was too busy and lazy at the time to go cooper pipe, plus I had the pex pipe already.

The crimp on rings fail, because the Pex gets hard, they fail all the time under 30 PSI. Especially if the fitting is plastic, and not cooper.

Shark bites, the more pressure, the harder they lock on

Been doing RV repair for 42+ years. I hate to mess with them. With old pex. once you touch one, the ones close by start leaking, and it never ends.

If ever a  slight freeze, they will pop off.

The best ones are the one's that sell at Ace, never had a leak or fail.Have completely plumbed a RV with them that froze.
