Transmission cooler x-section photos
Last year when I replaced my radiator, I also bought a new transmission cooler. I finally got around to scrapping the old one, but decided, like I often do, to find out what it looks like inside. I made a radial cut around the end and had to cut through the copper tubes, since they had been a soldered at the ends with brass. The photo with the gold coloring (brass) is the end piece and the other photo shows the copper tubing that runs the length of the tube. Coolant runs through those tubes from the ends while transmission oil surrounds them for cooling before going back to the transmission. Transmission oil enters and leaves through side ports, as seen in photos I've posted previously.
The width of the case is .20" (just under 1/4th inch). If I had known it was that thick, I would never have bought the new one. It would have been easy to clean off the rust and repaint it. This is the main reason I'm posting. If you have a rusty cooler, don't worry about it unless you suspect a blockage or have other damage.
