Dometic Ice Maker Replacement: What I did.

Anyone interested in replacing the ice maker in a Dometic refrigerator, here's what I did...

The ice maker and water solenoid in my Dometic RM1282 were seized in my recently purchased 2001 U320, and I like ice with my bourbon and branch, so I went through the learning process of replacing the broken parts with off the shelf parts through Amazon and eBay, vs. Dometic big CB parts.  Total cost for the overhaul was $63 plus 4ea male/female bullet connectors and a tub of heat transfer paste.

I replaced the defective water valve with Amazon part... B00T5U58DU, WV8047 icemaker water solenoid valve.  This has a different geometry than the stock valve, but came with an L bracket.  The inlet port is 1/4" male npt instead of male water hose thread, but I just unscrewed the Dometic adapter and threaded the 1/4" female connector direct...that solenoid inlet ended up oriented on top of the valve instead of the side, but there was enough slack in the line from behind the sink to pull the 180deg turn and make the connection without a kink.

The icemaker unit I ended up using is eBay item 121498094877.  It's an OEM Frigidaire/Sears FD1101S model icemaker and identical to the Dometic model, EXCEPT for the wiring and connector.  I removed (and replaced) the front panels on both original and new units to match up the wire colors to functions, as I couldn't find schematics on the interwebs...imagine that.  I cut the connectors off both harnesses and spliced the wires with insulated bullet connectors...will find a 4pin Molex connector set to finalize the install soon.  Here's the match up Orig Dometic-FD1101S...Line:Black-Black, Neutral:White-Blue, Ground:Green-Green/Yellow, Water Solenoid:Brown-Yellow.  Slathered heat transfer paste between the old ice maker's heat sink and the bottom of the mold heater coil on the base of the new ice maker before installing.  Also, as mentioned in some previous threads, the ice maker gets plugged into the upper outlet (all AC power sources) in the refer bay, fridge into the lower outlet (gen/shore only)....at least on my coach.  Woody.

p.s. I also bypassed the factory water filter and installed a RO system in the basement with a zero waste booster pump for the sink dispenser and ice maker.  Makes crystal clear ice cubes.  Anyone interested in how I did that, pm me and I can put up a what-I-did thread on that too.

I'm interested in the zero waste RO.  In our previous coach I mounted a 5 gal Culligan water bottle in the basement with a dedicated pump for the drinking spigot and ice maker.  We could keep the ice bin full (for tea or scotch, rarely bourbon) and not have to leave the water pump on.  I haven't put that setup in the current coach yet.    Those clear ice cubes will spoil you.

Now Johnny Black Label is pretty good sipping straight up.    I've found that in the right company passing a jug of Knob Creek back and forth makes a pretty good end of the day after a few hundred miles on the motorcycles.

Back to topic I like the RO idea.

I bought my icemaker replacement from FT Parts.  About $150.  Plug and play.  Do what makes you happy.

So that's $115 for a plug. I paid $35 and made my own plug.

Before I completely removed the ice maker, I bought one for around 30 bucks off of Amazon. Easier to just buy Ice. Although don't need ice to pollute my 3 fingers of Jack Single Barrel Select. I have a secret connection to Jack.
