Fast idle

I have a 91 GV U300 with 6v92. Does it have the  ability to do fast idle?

The 6v92 does not have a fast idle function,  with cruise control ,unless you have a pro-link and doing testing.

Yes, if you use the ProLink 9000, you can fast idle at 1000 rpm. It's part of the 1000 rpm injector test but you can use it alone without testing the injectors. This applies to all two cycle Detroits installed in Foretravels.

Thanks for the info. We try to find pro link on the cheap. Is it worth having one?

My dim memory probably I correct is that their was a fast idle somewhere in the coach.  Hit resume at idle?

Is the pro-link worth it , it is to me the learning curve takes some getting used to. But it gives me all the information I need to keep track of things running down the road.👍

Yeah they can be pricey, I was lucky and found one on eBay from a private party, with the cartridge for dedec 2&3 for 75.00, I took a chance and it worked out ok.

I used to demo the fast idle.  You are all sure that not one of your coaches have it?  Try resume and hold it on until the rpms comes up.  Pretty sure.

Bob,

No fast idle on Detroit 2 cycle coaches. It's part of the cruise on some non Detroit coaches. I bought a couple of Pro-Link 9000s that averaged about $130 each. This is page 291 (in white): MPSI READER MENU SELECTIONS Use the pages on each side of the one in white to open pages before or after.

When you test the injectors, you have a choice of 600 rpm or 1000 rpm. If you stop one command short of the 1000 rpm injector test, you get the fast idle. It can be wired in and the mechanical engines I drove all had it with a switch on the dash.

The Pro-Link will actually do more than on the page including a 5 minute limit on the normal 600 rpm idle setting as well as the late updates being able have a no-smoke setting that' s default on our coaches. It does mean slower from a stop but no smoke.

The Pro-Link is how a Detroit owner can tell exactly how many gallons the engine has used since new, the miles per gallon since new as well as trip mpg. Even gallons per hour.

Cartridges are available for most all electronic HD diesel engines as well as the electronic Allison and ABS brakes.

Look for them on Craigslist or eBay, you have to look for the many names they were sold under including Snap-On, MPSI, Kent Moore, Detroit Diesel. All two cycle Detroits fitted to Foretravels have the DDEC II model. The cartridge needed is the DDEC I & II or the DDEC II & III. Some may have had firmware updates with even more features.

They plug into the OBD II port under the dash on the driver's side.

I really hesitated to post this and if you say I am wrong then I am.

But someone hold the resume on the cruise control stalk at idle on a 6v92.

My memory I hope is good about this.

If not you do not have it.  Someone call James T to ask please.

Sorry to waste your time.  I drove and sold #2 6v92.  277/840 torque

Maybe wishfully thinking.

Maybe not.  What does the Foretravel books say?

Bob,

Thanks for the post! I tried this after I read about fast idle on a Cummins engined coach several years ago. I tried it but was unable to get it to work. Our coach came with all the books that were originally supplied with the coach. The lack of documentation about most systems is one of the big reasons this forum is so popular with owner/operators.

While the DDEC II wiring could be modified to give a fast idle like the manual transmission models, an accidental shift into drive could have disastrous results with the large amount of torque available at 1000 rpm. Our ProLink 9000 manual warns several times in the fast idle check list to make sure the transmission is not in gear or to make sure it's not accidentally selected. The cruise control overcomes this problem but I just don't see any way to activate it with the 6V-92TA. Perhaps there are other Detroit owners who have encountered this problem or have successfully engaged the fast idle?

Pierce,

I tried to engage the fast idle with the cruise control before and was unsuccessful.  I tried it again this morning with the same result.  I did hear a relay click in the dash when engaging the resume but it did not idle up.  I believe you are correct about the wiring to prevent shifting out of neutral at 1000 rpms with an automatic transmission to prevent a catastrophe.

I'm not about to try it idled up to 1000 rpms with the Pro- Link.  Use cautiously!!!

Why spend a lot of cash for fancy computer gizmos?  All you really need is the "RedNeck Fast Idle Tool".  I've had a similar device hanging in my garage for about 50 years.  Used to be very handy for adjusting and modifying the timing on mechanical advance distributers.
