High oil Temp reading

On my last trip with new VMSpc installed after about two hours of driving oil temp was 540 deg. I stopped checked oil level and it was ok and the oil was not hot to the touch. After next hour temp was 12544 degrees when I got to destination oil level was still ok and oil not very hot to the touch. With this all going on oil pressure stayed around 54-58, transmission temps around 180, coolant temp around 180 for the complete trip. Returning home all temps about the same except oil temp stayed at 0 degrees then after around a hour into the trip it went to over 15000 degrees. I would think it has to do with a sensor that is bad, Does any one have any suggestions what is going on? I guess I could just turn the VMSpc off.

Sounds more like a glitch in the VMSpc software.  If it was an engine sensor that went bad I'd think the engine computer would be throwing codes.

The software is OK.  Ron, from the main menu, select Advanced and then Communications.  Down near the bottom of the dialog box change data bus from Both to J1708.  Click on OK.  See if that helps.  The other bus (J1939) on early Cummins (pre 2006) was noisey and sometimes would give erratic data.

I would have someone check the oil temp sende if it is easy to do.  When we lookd we didn't see any engine code so it is also possible that there is a wiring problem somewhere else.

 I will try that. I am not too concerned with it like I was when it first happened. I will check with a mechanic I know.

I tried that this morning and my ISM11 was unhappy with that change.  I suddenly had 1.6 million miles.  But try it to see if it works on your engine.

VMSpc simply reads data on the data busses and displays what it sees.  If it sees junk thats what i will show.  It has very little capacity to smooth out data to take out some of the variations.  Something they are working on all the time in their continuous (slow) process of improvements.

I also have several erratic data fields that are being caused by bad data packets on the bus, or at least VMSPC think's they're bad.  I think the same Communications menu that Roger mentioned above has the field that reports bad data.  They told me it should be less than 1% and I'm typically seeing 30%.  You might check yours.

I've had a local shop connect their computer with bootleg Cat software tell me that they aren't seeing any data issues, so I don't know if it's the coach or the VMSPC yet.

On a side note, If oil gets hot it needs to be changed quickly.  If not changed,the oil will start to gel up.

The oil was not hot either of the times the oil temp was high. I stopped and checked it and wasn't even very hot to the touch. I would think with the readings I was getting the engine would have been glowing red or have melted. I am goin to do as Roger suggested and if that doesn't fix it I will just make several checks along the way till I am confident that everything is ok and just live with it. I am going to contact a mechanic friend and ask him some questions.

If it's not in the software it's a temp sensor,process of elimination,would stop by Lowes and pickup a temp gun,will come in handy.
Don't have vmspc but I thought the stock VDO gauges would still work,what do they say?By posting you already asked some
mechanic friends but the more the merrier.
